The Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) attracted 24 entries on Wednesday morning, and the connections of likely favorite Big Brown, impressive winner of the Florida Derby (G1), will draw 16th at the post position draw later this afternoon in Louisville.

"It's going to leave us with just a few options," said Michael Iavarone, co-managing partner of IEAH Stables, which owns Big Brown. "Either way, he's going to have to break to win this race, whether we draw inside or outside."

I think having so many ruins the event. They should put a cap - maybe a dozen.

I think the size makes the event.
Greatest race-hardest to win.

I like to follow races for fun.Don’t know anything about horses, don’t even like them. I go by the names- what sounds like a winner( yeah, typical female thing to do, I know). My dad always chose the gray horses, just because.
This is a LOT of horses to run at one time, tho.
Here are my picks- for the record:(choosing 3 because there are so many)
Pyro
Smooth Air and
Recapturetheglory.
I consider myself a winner if any of those 3 win, place or show. It’s always fun to see.
Let’s see if any Freeper can pick the winner!

“I think the size makes the event.”

Fewer than 6 isn’t very interesting, more than 12 or so seems to be distracting and unfair.

I agree. That's one reason it's so hard to win even if you have the best horse. All that squeezing and bumping out of the gate and running up the middle of the track on the first turn making some cover a bunch more ground, is what makes it so difficult to win. Not only do you need THE BEST horse on Derby day, but you need BIG LUCK too.

Speaking of luck...I don't like that Bob Black Jack drew # 13. I consider that BAD MOJO, no matter what PP he eventually gets, not that I thought he was likely to win it all, but I thought he had a good chance of hitting the board at big odds.

All the speed starting from the outside PP's tells me to go with one of the closers who can save ground. Colonel John? Pyro? Visionaire?

I love big fields.
Great horses can overcome adversity.
Big fields show that.
Plus they’re better to bet.

For amusement only, of course.

Sometimes the best horse doesn’t get it done. See Point Given, Afleet Alex, Easy Goer etc.

Don’t give up on Bob yet. He’s fast enough to get position, tough enough to hang on. Trainer is VERY pleased with the way he is training with blinks. :-)

Patience is right. We have mint growing in the “crunchy con” garden and tried to make one last week. Still not ready yet.

Wasn’t there another horse that’s supposed to be real good but didn’t get picked for some reason? Not enough wins or something like that?

Well, they take the top 3 yr. olds based on earnings in graded stakes races...can’t think of any they missed.

Do you think Dutrow really feels he can take the same Fla Derby trip and wire the field? Does B Brown have any other options from that PP? In your Derby experience have you ever seen a similar feat as this pulled off?

The Derby has been hard to pick but with all of these polycrap preps it only gets tougher.
