Ian McKellen will again take up the robes of Gandalf the Wizard in the cinematic adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy classic "The Hobbit" a British film magazine reported Wednesday.

But McKellen's publicist warned that final arrangements were yet to be made.

"Of course he wants to do it, but nothing's been agreed or signed," Clair Dobbs said.

Wouldn’t be the same with any other actor.

Nope, not the same. Which is why I was happy to see this.

I’d just as soon he didn’t. After reading his comment about Gandalf being a homo, I lost all respect for him.

McKellen was indeed a perfect Gandalf, in spite of his personal evils.

I’d be just as happy if they lost Andy Serkis, though, but doubt that will happen. I don’t think he quite “got” Gollum; I know he didn’t get what “gollum” was (i.e. swallowing, not coughing).

I was wondering about that too. Plus, I sort of feel that the whole book The Hobbit has a very different feel than LOTR. Its a much more innocent little story, and Gollum, scary as he is, is almost a comical figure. It really is much lighter fare. I wonder if Del Toro gets that. His Pan’s Labyrinth was truly dark.

Yes; “Pan’s” shows he’s quite the artist, but it is a miserably unhappy story.

However, Hellboy is (paradoxically) much lighter, more comic.

So, I’m not gloomy about it.

I have had Pan’s Labyrinth on my DVR for some time now. I was wondering if I should take the time to watch it or just delete it to make room.

Do you recommend it? Is it worth my time?

Ohhhh, boy; I don’t think I know you well enough to answer usefully. It’s very artistic, has a lot of imagination and humanity and beauty — but it’s also very violent and, in the end, VERY unhappy.

Artsier types will give you a different answer. It really depends on what you like and are looking for. Creative, artistic, well-crafted, horribly depressing: that’s my summary.

Hope that’s of some use.

Dude. You just gave me a chill.

I hope McKellen signs on. It will be an awesome film.

Thanks.

Sounds like my kind of flick.

Artsy and depressing.

I wonder if the guy who did Gollum’s voice for the BBC radio dramatization is still around. Can’t remember the name - but his voice is what Goillum should sound like.

Visually stunning, but a dark, violent, brooding and melancholy fantasy. If you are into graphic novels and adult fantasy, then definately see it.
