I install the new AVG 8.0 this morning and I now have an AVG tool bar. I don't want it.

Both are free on the Internet. Just do a Google search. I’ve only used Revo for a couple months. But it had darned good reviews and, so far, I’m pleased with it.

One of the reason I switched from Norton to AVG ( having used the free version years ago ) was AVG wasn't a drain on the system like Norton became.

You might want to check out Avast! As I stated above, I've had it on an older PC and never a problem. It was a pretty easy decision to convert my laptop over.

Thanks for the totally ( although expected ) useless addition to this thread.

It's like if we were on a car forum and someone was having problems with their GM vehicle. The suggestion “get a Toyota ( or another similarly reliable car )” is great in the long run but doesn't help the person one bit who still has the current GM problem sitting in his driveway.

Something on AVG must be running in the background because my netstat is still blinking.

I like it when he throws up stuff like that. I get very tense when something goes haywire with my PC and his pictures always break my tension.

I had to look it up but I am running AVG version 8.0.93 and haven’t had a problem yet. Still runs as good as the previous version for me. Updated it a few weeks ago.

Try turning off the Link Scanner

Would that be under tools?

I just unchecked it. I’ll be watching my netstat to see if that was it, thanks.

Netstat shows nearly constant churning of BW usage

That may be the result of a couple of 'background' features 8 has that 7 didn't.

I had to turn off the Resident Shield and LinkScanner components, as they made my system too sluggish. And I have a 3.02ghz with 1.5gb RAM.

I just unchecked Linkscanner and it's still going through BW. I'll uncheck Resident Shield now, thanks.

Both are unchecked and it’s still running slow and my netstat is still blinking. Now on my AVG I see the red shield with an ‘x’ on it, indicating a security alert.

My Netstat is blinking every 13-14 seconds.(depending on how fast or slow I say Mississippi)

What on earth could be going on every 13 seconds?

Funny how Windows needs so much HP.

I’m browsing right now on a Pentium II 400 Mhz laptop with 256 MB (Linux). No virus scanner hassles, either.

Are you running the free home version or the commercial version?

The free version checks for updates every day. The commercial version checks every hour, IIRC.

You also might open the AVG Interface panel and look through the options/preferences under Tools >> Advanced Settings to see if there is anything running.

I'm running the free version but I go into it twice a day and change the scheduled scanning time so it doesn't scan everyday, only when I want it too.

Advanced Settings to see if there is anything running.

Thank you. I'll go see.

That's good. Then, I wouldn't worry. Except that someone on an upthread post mentioned only a 30 day hiatus for email scanning before they charge for it. You may want to keep that in mind...

Check Task Manager to see if you can spot the process. Perhaps you can shut it down. Also, you may HAVE to if you want to do the uninstall.
