Grizzly attacks teen bicycle racer in Bicentennial Park ( Alaska )
The Anchorage Daily News ^ | June 29th, 2008 | WESLEY LOY

Posted on 06/29/2008 3:20:08 PM PDT by george76

A teenage girl riding in an all-night bicycle race suffered severe injuries early this morning when a bear attacked her on a trail ...

Police officers with shotguns escorted medics into dark woods to retrieve the girl...

"She was cut up and bit pretty good,"

After the mauling, the girl used her cell phone to call 911 but was unable to communicate...

Another rider who came along found her sitting on the ground and said she could utter only one word: "Bear."

He then used her phone to make another call for help.

Sinnott said he didn't arrive in time to see the victim before she was taken to the hospital, but he learned from emergency responders that the girl suffered multiple injuries.

The bear bit her on the head, torso and thigh, Sinnott said. She also had a "sucking chest wound" caused by a puncture to the lung cavity.

Mills, the police officer, opened a bag containing the injured girl's bicycle helmet, which the bear had chewed up.

It was lucky she had the helmet on, as the bear attempted to chomp her head...

***She also had a “sucking chest wound” caused by a puncture to the lung cavity. ***

A good reason to carry tampons.

I like reading military novels.

I so love this town! Even with too many newly transplanted dumbasses from places like OR, WA and CO it is still the best city on the planet.

I wouldn't wander around the Alaskan wilderness without a .44:

Having worked as a Game Biologist for the ADofF&G I know the dangers in Alaska. People always underestimate the potential for attacks by bears.

Cause will be attributed to climate change within the next news cycle.

You know, when I read something like this, I often wonder if people would risk their lives to save someone who did something stupid. I mean, you like to think if you saw someone being attacked on the street, you would stop to help. But what about someone who engages in very dangerous behavior and then their life is threatened. Would you risk your life to save that person. According to the wildlife biologist, this girl should not have been riding after dark in grizzly territory along a stream when the salmon are running. There are also warning signs posted. Even the medics needed armed escorts. Would you risk your life to save this girl?

Every now and then, rangers need to go through the woods to remind the carnivores that the bipeds with the guns are at the top of the food chain.

Another ap article on the subject mentions a Grizzly attack two weeks ago in the same area. Did the organizers of this event know about that? Did this girl or the bikers behind her know that?...curious.

You can never go wrong with a Smith and Wesson revolver.

I love exploring the outdoors, but I wouldn't want to be defenseless in a life-threatening situation. That's why I like the .44.

I am certain that joggers in California can also relate to the unfortunate experience of this Alaskan cyclist.

While I live where Black Bears run through my yard all the time, I really don’t fear them and I don’t pack...if I did, some NJ storm trooper would have his boot on my neck at some point. That said, I do own a number of weapons...at my mom’s place in Ohio for when I travel north. I wouldn’t be found in Grizzly country without my .480 revolver. I haven’t really thought about a 50 other than it’d hurt even more to shoot it! Heh.

I also have a .44 with a 10 inch barrel that I can shoot all day long. From what I read, the 480 has the same muzzle velocity at like 25 yards as the .44 at the end of the barrel. Either will do up a Bear but my ultimate preference would be no contact. If contact does occur, I’d prefer my Mossburg 12ga with hollow pt sabots. The wounds are so massive even the bear can’t take it.

Ya know, I live along the upper Yukon and where I live we shoot black bear that come around the house; we do fear them as they eat people around here; and these bear are rarely over 300 lbs too. Several people in our community of 100 White people and 28 Indians can pull off their shirt and show you the scars. We have grizz but they mostly stay up high and only show up first of spring & salmon time. I have had 2 blk bear over the years that came in on me like a cat with their ears twittlin. Most bear here run when they wind people, but some think food. Eventually, you will see this in N.J. because people havn't been shooting the bear that come around people enough.

And forget your 44 or 480; I have both and only swear by 460 now. I usually have 45-70 or 338 for bear protection but sometimes when I must carry 460. Reason is this picture below. 3/8 steel pipe, notice the 44 doesn't even give her a scratch, then look at 480 which dented pipe in some. then look at 460's hole; Using Hornady Custom in all three guns. 3/8 pipe

I realize this is an old thread.

It took me a few weeks to go back through a number of rounds before I could agree or disagree with your visual proof.

The 325grain 480 rounds I ran through HURT my hand. We shot an old bathtub and I tell ya, the 44, the 454 casull all went through all 3 sides. The 38 went through one, the 25 went ziiiinnnngg.

While I don’t have the same pipe, I can’t imagine the 480 wouldn’t go through. I could shoot the 44 all day long with one hand. I do that with the 480, I’m gonna smack myself in the head.
