All Things Considered, July 17, 2008 · A generation ago, the livelihood of Gloria Nunez's family was built on cars.
Her father worked at General Motors for 45 years before retiring. Her mother taught driver's education. Nunez and her six siblings grew up middle class.
Things have changed considerably for this Ohio family.
Nunez's van broke down last fall. Now, her 19-year-old daughter has no reliable transportation out of their subsidized housing complex in Fostoria, 40 miles south of Toledo, to look for a job.
Nunez and most of her siblings and their spouses are unemployed and rely on government assistance and food stamps. Some have part-time jobs, but working is made more difficult with no car or public transportation.

Because they can't afford meat the can eat fruits and veggies, get jobs, give up their car, and bike to work.
In 3 years they'll be far happier.
AND if we have Obama the whole process will be sped up by the lack of air conditioning.
Sounds like if they ate a healthy diet in the first place they wouldn’t have gotten to the position that they need to eat 12 bags of groceries full of meats and ice cream, sheesh. I feel no sorrow for them at all. This food depression will save those two tubbies their lives in the long run.
Doubt they are eating meats. Most likely they are carb addicted to starches like potatoes, carbs like pastas, and breads. That would explain the weight problems to some degree too. Sugar and starch are not the best as primaries.
You should read it, and then you'll understand all the attention. It's a typical liberal whine, one that shows just how very out of touch liberals are with reality. The author writes an article designed to create sympathy for these poor starving people:
The article points out that they've had to cut back on meat and ice cream and eat starchy foods like noodles and potatoes instead, because the main subject has never worked and lives on welfare and food stamps.
Classic liberal disconnect.

Dad was a union worker with a pension. Mom had an income. Yet for 20 years the daughter does nothing. Seems odd.
This same article was FReeped yesterday. But don’t worry about it.
It should have it’s own separate thread today as well.
The Nunez family is being held up to be scorned as we look at them with contempt and disgust.
Quite a noble goal of the liberal press, eh?
No. Actually, Mrs. Nunez’s dad was the union worker. A link in the article tells us that Mrs. Nunez is divorced.
Ooops. I guess I retract my comments about this being a duplicate post that need re-posting. Seems this is the fourth time this article has been posted.

I know FR’s search function sucks, but really....
First mistake.....
Heavens...maybe the rice, corn, potatoes, Snickers, chips, cake, etc. should be out of reach, too.
Judging by the photo, it doesn’t appear that Angelica and her mother are missing any meals.
Dumpster diving for us all, until the Messiah is elected, when suddenly the fish and the loaves and the hamburgers will be multiplied and all will eat and be satisfied.

The left destroys businesses and loves to have people dependent on government. Eventually there will be no more working people left to pay taxes to fund the government handouts. That will be communism, which always fails, making everyone poor and miserable (except the power elite)
...”women,minorities and fatties hardest hit”.
Hate to break the news to you, but you aren’t the only person in the US who has not seen Titanic.
How come it is only high tax and regulation states with powerful unions that are having economic troubles? I understand Texas and many southern states are booming. Maybe the Ohio and Michigan legislatures ought to cut tax rates and and try to eliminate regs hostile to business. They won’t do that, its too easy to blame it the GW bogeyman and his wascely wepubwican minions and to suck up to union thugs.
I don’t think so, before the Left totally destroys this economy, I believe the people will eventually get off their dead arses and resist.
“Remember when people used to migrate to where the jobs are?”
I’ve been arguing this for a long time. There are plenty of jobs out there. We just have a nation that refuses to move and a government that enables them to hold that position.
This is absolutely the stuff of the “Grapes of Wrath.” And while our nation lauds Steinbach’s work as classic, we have completely abandoned the driving forces that made his work possible.
Some have called the Grapes of Wrath a socialist manifesto, but I wonder what Steinbech would say if he came back today and met the Nunez’s. When I compare the stuff the Joads were made of relative to these leaches, it’s quite telling.
These people have no dignity, and nor do they have a sense of pride. They merely exist.
Sad day.
