My 17 year old Grandson is looking for A university that he can double major in philosophy and physics. Thus far he has visited Wheaton, University of Dallas and North Texas State. Naturally he likes all of them but it would be much easier on the family if he would pick North Texas State. He lives in Prosper, Texas not that far away but far enough that he would not stay at home. I need help convincing him to select NTU. Please give me some ammunition. SF

We lived just south of Denton for 13 years. Moved away in 1998. UNT has been a hot bed of homosexual activists and occult spiritualists (especially in the music department). Every university has it danger zones. UNT is certainly NOT without its good points. Parents need to go into any college with eyes wide open.
Whose interests are you looking out for here?
Get a financial aid award letter from each school, visit and talk to students and faculty, and then decide.
Few actually pay full sticker price.

Our son went away to school — Notre Dame, in Indiana. We are in So California. He thot it would be just about far enough, but when it came to Thanksgiving and weekends that he just wanted to come home, he could NOT. It was too far, travel was too complicated and expensive/ last minute. He had to stay at NDU over Thanksgiving, but all his friends went home/ lived locally.
This year he will be at a local college. He is so content, being near home. Can get home if he needs. We can get to him if we need without much problem.
Also, he doesn’t have to change car registration, voter registration, pay out-of-state tuition, etc.
I highly recommend a university in your same state, and he would say that too.
This was supported by a high school classmate, 2 years ahead of me, who transferred there from the teacher's college we were both attending in Edmond, Oklahoma.
Problem was, he didn't come home and say "that place is infested with druggies", he came home and said "wanna smoke a bowl?"
A nuke over UNT would improve the community of Denton.
"Because I said so"
is no longer an option, eh?
I recommend Texas State University in San Marcos. Very good school and that is where I graduated from: )

North Texas State University changed its name about 20 years ago to University of North Texas. (I remember joking about whether or not the university’s radio station KNTU would change its call letters accordingly.)
Consider Texas A&M. Go visit the campus and take a student guided tour.
OTOH, my daughter is entering her 4th year at UNT, and she loves it there. It wasn't her first (or second) choice, but she agrees with us now that UNT was a better fit for her.
The $$$ difference between UD & UNT ranges from $25-$30K per year.

My daughter is a senior at Texas State. While many people consider it a “party school!”, show me a college that ain’t.
I second the recommendation - TSU is a good school and not so big that a kid will get lost in the shuffle. far less expensive than the big name schools in Texas, to boot.

I say bravo to his choice of majors, learn how to think systematically, learn to be a problem solver, learn how to apply your problem solving abilities to the business world.
