A 10-year-old boy is recovering after a pit bull attack left him with injuries so severe that he had to have his arm amputated.

The boy was alone at his Paw Paw home in Van Buren County, Michigan, for a short time this weekend.

Investigators say that is when the family's two-year-old pit bull attacked the boy.

When the boy's older brother returned home, he was able to free the victim and rush him to the hospital.

The boy, whose name has not yet been released, is now being treated at a hospital in Kalamazoo.

Neighbors say this dog bit someone else earlier this year.

Police say the dog has been euthanized.

OH Lord, it was the family’s dog?

(shakes head in unbelief) Prayers for that boy.

A bit more info from WWMT:

The attack happened around 11:00 am this morning while the boy was home alone. An older brother returned home to find the boy still being attacked, and took the boy to the hospital. Both parents were in Indiana at the time.

The two year old Pit Bull named Torco was euthanized at the Van Buren County Animal Shelter. The Van Buren County Sheriff's Office is still investigating and says they will turn the case over to the county prosecutor's office for review.

Shoot the dog, shoot the parents.

The Dogs of Peace.

In all honesty though what is the point of owning a dog that has that kind of power? I’m sure most are great but why own a dog that could kill or maim a person if it has a bad day? Whats wrong with a lab or a beagle?

“Neighbors say this dog bit someone else earlier this year.”

Any dog that potentially dangerous should be on a one strike and your out policy. I don’t understand keeping a pit that has shown itself to show any type of antisocial behavior around a child.

Neighbors in the area tell 24 Hour News 8 that they saw emergency crews at the same home earlier this summer because of the dog attacking another person in the home.

"We actually confronted him about it because we were very concerned for our own children," said Dave Bos, who lives across the street from where the attack happened. "It breaks my heart to see that a young child like that...had to lose his arm as a result of it. It's very depressing," he said.

Another neighbor, Doug Resman, says he even tried contacting law enforcement about the dog.

"They just said you have to wait until something else happens," said Resman.

What can the parents be charged with? Clearly the dog was a known danger and they were extremely negligent.

Prayers for that young boy and his older brother. The parents need to be slapped at the very least. The dog already proved to be a menace; their son had to be maimed before anything was done about it. Poor kid.

We were taught in law school that under the English Common Law, “every dog is entitled to one bite.” That old presumption flies in the face of this new American breed which started in the middle 19th century. Some jurisdictions simply ban the Pit Bull. I would suggest a rebuttable presumption of reckless endangerment (gross misdemeanor) in any biting case with such animals. Or a more severe presumption against the dog’s master, such as intent.

And killing such dogs is imperative.

I would bet this:

Family was black.

Dog was not neutered.

Maybe not.
Around here, there are plenty of white trash pit bull breeders/fighters. Beer-drinking, wife-beater wearing, 80’s camaro-driving, living up to the stereotype morons.

What a horrible story.

When I was younger, I always carried an Uncle Henry 5 inch folding lockblade knife which I took considerable pride in keeping razor sharp.

One night as I was leaving an adult education class at a local high school, I was walking across a darkened lawn to my car when an unleashed pitbull owned by some locals standing in an adjoining parking lot came charging at me.

In a flash, the knife was open, I was crouched, my left forearm was out but not too far out as a target for the dog. My thinking being that when he hit my forearm, I would forcefully ram it back into his mouth while simultaneously slitting his throat or, repeatedly stabbing him high in the rib cage and cutting down between the ribs. In those few seconds while he was charging, I also considered options should he not take my forearm as bait and I had to use that arm to then deflect his attack away from my vital areas.

Fortunately for all concerned, the dog stopped his charge about ten feet from me, hesitated, then turned and went back to his owners who were chasing wildly after him. We never spoke but I'm sure they saw my knife blade as I was intentionally moving it so they would see the reflection as the dog ran back to them.

I’ll admit my geography ignorance - does Michigan have a border with Indiana? I know Kentucky does, but the Eastern Midwest can really confuse me!

I don’t know, but if it’s more than an hour away, they shouldn’t have left a 10 yo! and with a pit bull!!!

I’ll go look it up.

I agree that leaving a child with a dog known to bite family members is insane, irrespective of the distance. I had noticed the “gone to Indiana” line, though, and wondered if it were like “gone to South Carolina” from my house - about 30 minutes away in average traffic!

The only time that we ever had a 10 year old at home alone, was by accident when the school had to shut down early once.

(no pit bull either)
