Should the Obamanable No-man make it into the White House this Fall, I plan to console myself with my first handgun purchase. I also plan to take a concealed-carry class and, of course, training on using a handgun.
I've used rifles and shotguns for many years but have never even fired a handgun. What caliber and model would you recommend that would be easy and fun to shoot for me, but also my petite wife, who may need to use it to protect the kids if I'm not home.
Buy two pistols. If your wife is petite, she won’t care for the big blast and kick from a .40 or .45.
Better get it sooner rather than later; Otherwise your CCP might get inexplicably delayed. I’m going to try to get mine this month, so if any obscene restrictions come about in January I’ll be grandfathered in.
I have a Glock 27, but it may be too wide for small hands; The Bersa equivelant is pretty thin and I’ve heard good things about it. It’s been reccomended several times to me by women.
If your wife isn’t as serious about the training and range time, then go with a revolver. Little to screw up when you really need it to work.
.357 revolver with a 4 inch barrel. You can shoot the .357 the wife can shoot .38 special, .38 special +P or move up to .357
Go to an indoor range ... rent or borrow different types of pistols to see what works best for you.
Revolver. Less complicated and don't have to train yourself to deal with FTF or FTEs except to pull the trigger again.
.357. Load it with .38 for the Mrs.
For home defense, you're going to get a lot of posts suggesting the 12ga shotgun. You get the "warning shot" as you rack the first shell and the lower penetration of buckshot.
Popular home defense calibers are .45, .40, .9mm and .380.
Why let Obama decide if you're going to purchase a handgun? Don't be dependent on him. Be your own man, buy it now.
My pistol is the Ruger GP-10 or something. Get a gun with a ‘mechanical’ sounding name, not something macho sounding like “Dessert Hawk” that sounds like you wanted to shoot someone. Also use “Glasser Safety slugs” for home defense. Sounds “safe”, and they will not go through the perp, through the wall, through your children's room, etc. They explode on contact for “safety”.
Before you purchaese, let your wife go with you and handle the handguns you’re considering, especially if you’re counting on her to defend the home front if you’re out of the castle.
Insure she can rack the slide if you go semi-auto. Rule of thumb is .40 caliber or better, although there’s nothing simpler to handle and fire than a revolver.
A .38/.357 revolver is always better than a jammed semi-auto.

unless you would prefer the ease of a revolver. then go for a .38 or .357.
revolvers have less safety features. maybe you should look at double action only (DAO), spur-less revolvers. you dont cock them. the trigger takes more pressure to fire, but the chance of an accidental discharge is lower. cocked revolvers can have hair triggers.
but just go to a range and try some out.

.357 magnum. Double action so you can point and shoot without cocking the hammer. Smith & Wesson makes a solid, reliable one. You can shoot .38 downloads so the recoil is not too strong. For home safety, I prefer the revolver. Less chance of jamming than the semi-automatic.
I also like a rubber grip. Does not slip when your hand sweats. S&W also makes a hammerless pistol. I like this because you can point and shoot without worrying about the hammer getting stuck.

Amazed at the number of recommendations for revolvers. I had never really thought of that. Are they less expensive? Aren't they a pain to reload when at the range?
The 12 gage is already in a "safe but ready" spot with shells next to it. I thought a handgun would be easier and faster with follow-up shots.
If you get a revolver, get one with a transfer bar (for example, a Ruger) so it doesn’t fire if you drop it.
And if you have young kids, keep it locked up. They make safes that open very quickly.
I have a short-barrel Mossberg 12 gauge under my bed.
Consider a revolver for reliability. I've seen people jam their automatics during range practice. You don't want that happening when time comes for a life-death situation.
They have speed loaders for revolvers. Not much trouble at all to reload.
I got mine when OJ Simpson walked. Glad I did too. They’ve practically banned full-carry permits in my state. They are a lot more difficult to obtain.
