I Learned Something About Abortion Today
IMDb ^ | Aug 25, 2008 | Moi

Because I am addicted to arguing, I sometimes stray from Free Republic to go lock horns with liberals in their haunts. I don't go to DU, they delete you the minute they sense your shadow casting its blue shade across their tofu. I go to IMDb, where everyone roams free.

The Obamites hold forth endlessly about how Bush has crippled women's sexual freedom. Any restriction on abortion, you see, cripples women's sexual freedom. How can anyone get laid if you can't have RU-486 via drive-thru?

Now, I'm not really particularly interested in the abortion issue. I used to care, and was adamantly pro-choice (I never wanted children.) Now I'm older and don't really have a dog in this fight anymore, so to speak. But my years at FR have brought me to at least understand the pro-life side of the aisle, and I often argue it against liberals more out of a restless desire to irritate them than any sincere concern.

But today I got a little jolt. I posted this thread in the Politics forum at IMDb:

Would you agree to outlaw abortion if a procedure could be perfected that would extract an embryo, alive, at four months, and allow it to grow to term in an incubator and be put up for adoption with no further claims on or problems for the mother? The procedure (in this hypothetical situation) would be no more painful or expensive than an abortion. The only difference in outcome would be that the baby lives.

Unless some vastly different answers have been added in the last 15 minutes, the immediate consensus was "NO." No, who would pay for it? NO, who would adopt all these babies? NO, what if you don't want your offspring running around... alive.

Other than one who groused about a woman having to carry a tiny fetus a few extra weeks to get to the 4-month mark, none of the objections had anything to do with a woman's sexual freedom.

It's about money, and control. It's about having the power to kill.

I just didn't know this about the pro-choice side. They SAID it was about sexual freedom.

But their objections had little to do with sex.

Ouch! Good job, you got them to admit what it is all about. This election may be a defining moment!

Welcome to the real world of baby hating pro-abortionist. I am glad you have had your eyes opened. It is all about money and true hatred of babies on the part of many of these people.

It sounds as if they were just parroting what they've heard. If these people were under 30, they don't remember a time when abortion was considered murder. To the under 30's, there has always been a mothers right to kill her offspring.

I got into a discussion with a pro-choicer. She told me it was "just a foetus" I told her Foetus is latin for offspring. She said I lied. She looked it up.

Then I told her what partial birth abortion was. That was a loud discussion until she checked out the truth.

Sometimes these people just don't know truth. They buy the soundbites.

She actually did change her mind on partial birth abortion. She was appalled to hear what it was. But shortly after, we slowly quit talking. It got longer between conversations until I never heard from her again.

I have a friend like that at work. We swore off Politics when she assured me she was so embarrassed to have Ronald Reagan as president.

Oh good gravy! Do peoples brains run out their ears while they’re sleeping? I’m embarrassed that Carter was EVER our President. I was a registered Dem until Reagan ran for office. Carter did it.

I’ve got another shock for you - it’s actually ritual sacrifice to the ancient demon-god Molech. Thousands of years have passed since infants were actually thrown into the blazing maw of the idol, but the goals of the sacrificers remain exactly the same - so that all may go well for them. So they can save money for a downpayment on a house. So they can finish grad school and make a ton of money. So they can keep the man they’re with. Etc., etc., etc.

I was in a dentist’s office and got into a discussion with the dentist and her assistant about partial birth abortion. (I know, not the best place). This was in 2000 when Gore was running and they were enthusiastic about how wonderful Gore was.

I told them what partial birth abortion was. They were like, no, they don’t do that!

You are right, a strong effort to keep abortion around is dedicated to making sure people are ignorant about the nature of it.

What's interesting is that their arguments are very similar to slaveholders' arguments 150 years ago: Our economy depends on it, who is going to pay for it, how will they take care of themselves if we let them go free, and they are OUR property, not yours!

It's really an economic/personal property issue.

A 'fetus' has less respect than a roach with some people.

Apparently, people are Endowed by Their Mothers with the Right to Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness, but Only If the Mother Says So.

It's difficult to describe to someone. They just can't grasp that anyone would kill that way. I don't like being called a liar but I will keep telling people and saying to look it up if they don't believe me.

The other thing that's scary is that some people that are all for abortion don't even know what it is they're supporting.

I agree completely. Looks like choice is just a smoke screen to justify bad behavior and poor choices.

It certainly isn’t about choice. Consider how many choices are involved in being pro choice. It is all about choices, a small but important difference. Why there is the choice to bed, or wed, or shove convention in the closet, or use some sort of protection, the before pill or the after pill the choice to carry full term or not, the choice to allow the heat of the moment to cause your brain to lose control and do things leading to pregnancy after a host of poor choices have already been made or good choices not made that should have been made until the only choice left after a host of poor choices is the death of that produced by another choice. So many choices so little time.

"No, who would pay for it?"

LOL, when has that question ever stood in the way of a liberal?

I admit I am naive in this debate; I didn't realize it was about sexual freedom. I thought they argued it was a biological freedom (i.e. the right to do what one wants with one's body).

The "sexual freedom" argument takes this to a whole new level. We have the case of Susan Smith in South Carolina who, IIRC, murdered her children because her boyfriend didn't want kids. We have the case of Casey Anthony in Florida who, while we all pray her daughter Caylee is alive, most likely did murder her children and went to what appeared to be a pretty wild party afterwards.

So there are two prominent examples--one of a woman who did kill her children, and one of a woman who allegedly killed her child--for their sexual freedom.

How long before the pro-abortion crowd starts seeing cases like these as just really, really late term abortions?

I’ve seen this question asked in other forums and the answers were the same as you describe each time.

Abortion is is about control .... total and complete control ... not of one’s own body, but of anothers’.

Holding someone’s life or death in your hands is the most powerful control experience a person can have, and there is not shortage of people who become drunk on power.
