Don LaFontaine, the voice of movie trailers, dies at 68

You may not recognize the name Don LaFontaine but you definitely know the voice.

LaFontaine, who passed away Monday at the age of 68, was THE voice of movie trailers for almost 30 years.

It occurs to me that there are a number of people in the entertainment business whose work is on display practically everywhere yet only hardcore fans know who they are. This man was one of them. I bet that he has been heard by just about everyone in the English speaking world yet only a relative handful know who he is.

There are a couple of faux trailers out on YouTube that parody LaFontaine’s approach, the best one is “Glen and Gary and Glenn and Ross” based on “Glengarry Glenross.” Others I know of are “Must Love Jaws” and “Ten Things I Hate About Commandments.”
