FRGC – Tuesday – SNUBBIES!!!!

Today I am going to bring up the subject of the great and small snubby. Although , the snubby comes in a variety of calibers, all the way from 22 Short up to the S&W 500 Mag, and are fairly large for a snubby. The big bore snubbies do provide compact, outright raw power, and any close encounter with critters that bite and scratch would be well defended against with one of these. Snubbies can also be attributed to the small compact autos, all the way up to an including the Colt Officers size and smaller.

My favorite is also a big bore. A 3-inch 625 in 45 ACP, this gem came to me by way of a trade a few years back. As accurate as any of my 1911’s, it sports some Innovative Weaponry night-sights, Pachmayr Compac grips, is ‘fairly’ concealable under my coat during the winter, and packs the 45 punch.

I also like the k-frame snubbies too. The Mdl 64 in 2 inch is the Mdl 10 in stainless. Fixed sight guns are always a problem, especially if your rounds don’t hit where the sights aim. This Mdl 64 hits an inch high with a 6 o’clock hold with standard 158 LSWC and dead on to point of aim with 129 gr Hydra-Shoks. It is one of the most accurate snubs I have had.

One that I haven’t shot yet, but have high hopes is this S&W Mdl 13 in 3-inch. The ‘FBI’ model and the last revolver issued by the FBI. It also has probably one of the smoothest, lightest, FACTORY, DA triggers I have owned.

Did I mention snubby autios? How about the EMP from Springfield Armory. Now this is as compact a 1911 as it gets. And in 9mm. We can’t keep these on the shelf, one, they are hard to get, and two, they fly out the door when we do get one.

Ok, so there are the lightweight J-Frame size S&W’s and Taurus, Charter Arms, Colt, etc. I hope that you all would contribute your favorites.

One of the finest additions anyone can make to a snubby has to be a pair of Crimson Trace Laser Grips". You will put the bullet exactly where you want it with these.

Here's mine:

13 ounces unloaded...

S&W 340PD. J-Frame. Has a bit of a kick when spitting out .357 mag. Not unmanageable tho' - I can usually put all 5 shots in about an 8" circle at 15 feet, which is all I ask out of this.

Your's are all K-frame or bigger. And why have a snub if it's only "fairly concealable, under a coat, in winter"?

Got me a Taurus 605, j-frame equivalent. No handy pictures other than stock. Not a real comfortable gun to shoot, but that's not it's niche.

We've got a couple of snubbies that we really like.

I really like the Charter Arms Bulldog in .44 spl. Ballistically that cartridge is almost identical to a .45 ACP, but in a smaller and lighter delivery vehicle. It was my carry piece of choice for quite a while.

Mrs. L has Taurus snubbie in .44 spl that she's very partial to. I don't have an image uploaded of it, but it's a 2.5 inch barrel, ported model.

Extremely light yet remarkably easy to bring back on target for a follow up shot.

Another great topic Pistolshot. Thanks.

How cute! How lady-like, LOL!

I’m getting my very own shotgun for Christmas. I can’t WAIT! Up until now, I’ve just used Husband’s or Sonny’s, but I think a woman going on 50 deserves her very own, don’t you? :)

My Colt Magnum Carry. I bought this piece brand new in 1999 (the only year it was made) for just under $400. I put 50 rounds through it before Colt announced that they were out of the double action revolver business (they have since returned to their senses). You can't get one in this condition now for under $1200. Unfortunately, it is now a safe queen, I pocket carry a Kahr PM9 instead.

Good God, the yellow and red gripped revolvers look like .500 S&W or 460 S&W X frames.

Snub nosed hand cannons?

Lurker, I have one of the early model Charter Arms 3-inch 44 Spl snubbies. It is a great gun and pretty accurate.

That's the one. I picked mine up used for $250.00.

What a bargain.

Yes! I bought the original when it came out and then the 4" 500 and the snubbies. Just had to have them. Sort of a "Man against machine" contest when I shoot them. Loads of fun and makes the guy in the lane next to you think you've blown something up when you pull the trigger.

The unfluted Model 29 is my favorite though. Sexy looking, easy to handle and just a joy to shoot.

A couple of fairly well-known ones:

Joe Friday [Jack Webb] with his Detective Special:

General and Chief of National Police Nguyen Ngoc *Larry* Loan, 01 February 1968 with his .38 S&W M49 *Bodyguard and Viet Cong assassination platoon leader Nguyễn Văn Lém:*

My old S&W M49 is showing its age. I've had it nearly 40 years now.

I have long wanted one in .45 AutoRim. There was a custom pistolsmith in the St Louis area who built less than a dozen such conversions, so it's not likely I'll run across one. But if an example can be found, it might be duplicated.

Detective Special was my issue weapon back in the day.
Loved that little guy and shot it better than issue 1911.
Now I stash a Model 36 and pine for a good price on a Colt.

Is the 45 AutoRim like the 45 ACP, but with the rim so you don’t need the half-moon clips?
