Word For The Day, Wednesday, September 10, 2008 - kvell
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 09/10/2008 | The Janitor

Posted on 09/10/2008 3:22:35 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

kvell • \KVEL\ • verb

to be extraordinarily proud; rejoice

Example sentence:

Critics kvelled over the violinist's triumphant return to the stage where she had made her debut many years ago.

Did you know?
We are pleased to inform you that the word "kvell" is derived from Yiddish "kveln," meaning "to be delighted," which, in turn, comes from the Middle High German word "quellen," meaning "to well, gush, or swell." Yiddish has been a wellspring of creativity for English, giving us such delightful words as "meister" ("one who is knowledgeable about something"), "maven" ("expert"), and "shtick" ("one's special activity"), just to name a few. The date for the appearance of "kvell" in the English language is tricky to pinpoint exactly. The earliest known printed evidence for the word in an English source is found in a 1952 handbook of Jewish words and expressions, but actual usage evidence before that date remains unseen.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!

Here is my example with today's WFTD.

As the good citizens of Alaska kvells at the selection of their Governor by McCain, dems panic and the drive-by media scrambles to discredit her, and conservatives continue to rally to her side.

Why Sarah Palin Makes such a Big Difference for the GOP Ticket

No pushing at the door please!

Happy Humpday Everybody!

The libs be whining, not kvelling over the use of Fairfax H.S. for today's rally. But you KNOW, were it the Obams, it would not be a disruption or untoward show of support for a candidacy, it would be a LEARNING EXPERINCE>

Considering the source, we should be kvelling at the rabid attacks of the Left on Gov. Palin - they are a ringing endorsement to all right-minded folks.

I love all those sources and how they are unnamed, with no dates or times to back up their stories. They’re pathetic.

Hey just because she doesn't look like all those presidents on the dollar bills and she is the change that I believe in and is the one that we've been waiting for does not mean a thing...

And how the heck do you smoke oxycotin? I’m calling bullclinton on this story.

But if they really want to go there:

For example, in recalling his high school days in Hawaii, Obama declares: “I kept playing basketball, attended classes sparingly, drank beer heavily, and tried drugs enthusiastically … If the high didn’t solve whatever it was that was getting you down, it could at least help you laugh at the world’s ongoing folly.””

I reckon you light it on fire and inhale the fumes. But that's just a guess. ;-)

i have to say, i have some trepidations about what happens on 11/5 if McCain wins. Not nearly as many trepidations i would have if Obams were to WIN, mind you. But it is entirely possible that there will be some rioting in the DC metro area.

I’ve never heard of smoking it, but I think just about anything can be delivered faster via inhalation versus ingesting. (As long as the active ingresients aren’t chemically altered, that is.)

But I’m not a doctor.

i have had oxycontin, and i can’t recall if it’s a capsule or a tablet. in any event, i guess you would have to melt it down and use a pipe to inhale it? i am SO not into the drug culture. Hey, HD is/was, maybe he has some ideas.

The late night comics have turned:

As the Humor Turns: Biden Gets Late-Night Shock Treatment [Kathryn Jean Lopez]

Jay Leno: “You know...those glasses” Palin “wears? Those are...a hot item right now. ... Everybody’s buying them. They’re huge, selling much better than the Joe Biden hair plugs.”

Jay Leno: “Out on the campaign trail this week, once again John McCain spoke about the nightmare of being stuck in a...tiny 8 x 10 room thinking he might go crazy. Not in Vietnam — when he got stuck in the Capitol elevator with Joe Biden,” and Biden “wouldn’t shut up.”

David Letterman: “How about that Barack Obama?” They are “saying for the first time he’s starting to slip in the polls,” but “don’t worry. He’s got a plan. He’s going to go back to campaigning in Europe.”

we’ll see how long that lasts. it has to be disconcerting for the libs, though. i heard meghan mccain on F&F this AM, she sounded so cute and normal. she talked about how people who are running for president from the time they are in HS and college are “annoying”. that is so xsteen. she spends so much of her life being ANNOYED! everything is ANNOYING! LOL!

They’re tablets. Druggies will crush them and either snort or dissolve them and inject. Lots of people have OD’ed doing that. The F’nDA has big warning labels on the drug. I believe that’s what the notorious Mr. Limbaugh was using.

very touching story of Charles DeGaulle and his down syndrome daughter. SG i think i just realized that i had mixed up the book you are reading Time Travelers Wife, with the book Memory Keepers Daughter! i have read both, but i was very surprised at your reaction to the book and i now know it is bc we were talking about two diff books. I enjoyed Time Travelers Wife, but i bought it at an airport and read it on the plane so i was into it pretty quickly. Memory Keepers Daughter is a very touching story and involves a downs syndrome child, which is why i was going to ask you about it just now and remembered you were reading a diff book altogether!
