Rep. Charles Rangel, a New York Democrat, said Wednesday he will not step down as chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee in the face of a call from the Republican leader in the House for him to do so.
Rep. Charles Rangel says he will pay back taxes on rental property he owns in the Dominican Republic.
Rangel has been under fire for failing to report income from a rental property he owns in the Dominican Republic.
He admitted Tuesday he had not paid tax on the income, but said it was a mistake and he will pay whatever back taxes he owes. He said the income had gone directly toward paying down the mortgage on the property and he had rarely if ever received income statements related to it.
"I really didn't pay any attention to it. I wasn't getting any money from it," he said, calling his failure to pay taxes "an omission that's irresponsible, and that's it."
"I don't believe that making mistakes means you have to give up your career," he said.
He also admitted that he had not been charged interest on the mortgage for the past 18 years, but said he had "no clue" that the mortgage lender had made that decision. He denied having been singled out for preferential treatment.

Only the House can remove a member as they are Constitutionally in control of the membership rules. San Fran Nan could strip him of his chairmanship, I believe. The House Ethics Committee could begin an investigation. But removal of Rangel is 2 or 3 moves down the chessboard.
Only Republicans quit when they’re caught at something. Democrats never do.
“....Only Republicans quit when theyre caught at something. Democrats never do...”
You got that right! Cold cash Jefferson is still there.
Under RAT control, the “Ethics Committee” is an empty suit.
As I understand it, it was a Republican rule that the Chairman had to give up his seat on indictment (or was it an ethics investigation?). The Dems used our own rule against us with great glee. 'Course they have no such rule.
The Democrats are an amoral party. There is no conflict of interest for them to line their pockets while picking yours.
Ok just follow me for a moment if I (just a normal working American) didn’t pay taxes for a number of years on income from any source would I not be brought up on tax evasion charges and be hit with so many penalty charges that my grand-children’s children would be paying what I owed after I died. If I am correct how then can this crook and others like him get away with this type of crime?
Hey, hey, ho, ho, Chuckie Rangel’s got to go!
When Rangel got his seat he defeated another disgraced Rat Congressman, Adam Clayton Powell Jr. The House had removed Powell, but he sued and got the SCOTUS to have him reinstated....then he lost to Charley.
congressional ethics...what a joke
congressional ethics...what a joke
If Barry was smart he with call out Charlie and throw him under the bus. It would be the evidence, the only evidence, that Barry wasn’t a party hack.
That's correct. Only the little people ever have to face the IRS. Democrats that are Members of Congress may engage in any sort of financial criminality without fear of punishment. Republicans have no such privileges. Even when in power Republicans prefer to be doormats for Democrats rather than be called "racists", or be accused of not being "bipartisan".
In addition, the Democrats always have their partisan attack dog media that they can use to hound anyone who bothers them. They always get sympathy in the press. Also their fellow Democrats in the Department of Justice will always give them a pass on prosecution. And if a Democrat should managed to find him or herself under indictment from the Department of Phony Justice, they can expect a minor slap on the wrist, and then it's just business as usual again.
Charlie Rangel is the typical democrat cheat and hypocrite. That he will not willingly step down tells us even more about him. Republicans need to grow some courage and take this cheat to the mat!
