CBS EARLY SHOW co-anchor Harry Smith conducted an exclusive interview with Sen. Barack Obama earlier today in Richmond, Va. Among other topics, the senator told Smith why it’s so important for him to take a break from his campaign to see his grandmother. “My grandmother's the last one left,” Obama told Smith. The senator added, “She has really been the rock of the family, the foundation of the family.” Obama didn’t get to his mother before she died. “Yeah, got there too late,” he says. “You know, I mean, it was sort of like this, in the sense that she had a terminal illness. We knew she wasn't doing well, but you know, the diagnosis was such that we thought we had a little more time and we didn't. And so I want to make sure that I don't make the same mistake twice.”

I find this utterly incomprehensible. A man of his means not going to see his Mom before she passed away. God help us.
I break with the thread, and respectfully approve of the guy doing something human, taking time for his ailing grandmother. My deepest repects to him for considering her need for his consolation at this time. Having grand children of a mixed race, I know it isn’t easy for either of us, and I hope the two of them can have some quiet time, as he will need to embrace the pain that is shortly to befall him.

Like most concur this does not pass the smell test. He does not want to miss the chance to say “goodbye” or whatever and yet he has time too do his best Steve Urkel impersonation on Ellen?!

What we don't find admirable is his not going to see his dying Mother. In fact I find it incomprehensible. So now he says he will correct that mistake. Well, the reports say his Grandma is gravely ill and Barack is dancing on TV.
Explain that to me.
He is so close...that is why the last time in Hawaii he spent what, one day if that with her? From what I read, he didn’t even take his daughters to see her...

Ugh, the thought of Obama anywhere NEAR the Office of Presidency is such a daunting, scary and skin crawling thought.

You see Harry, I spoke to my grandmothers doctor and it appear after I threw her under the bus, she sustained a hip fracture. No under my health plan I guarantee coverage to those with traumatic bus injuries. John mccain on the other hand wants to give those thrown under buses a “tax break”
Forgive the cynicism, but this move tells me he is losing ground with women in his internal polling data. Nothing this close to the election happens for benign reasons. He could just state “family reasons” and go right away, but it is planned 4 days out and he is doing TV interviews on the subject furnishing us with a sob story.
Sorry Zero, you politicized the move yourself. Now we have no choice but to view it in that vein. He was just in Hawaii for a week two months ago. The McCain camp needs to start dropping hints about where this race really is. The drive by’s sure as hell aren’t going to do it.

If she is so sick what in hell is he doing campaigning? When I was told my mom was failing..doing poorly I dropped everything and got there and 11 days later she was gone..So this jackass “doesn’t want to make the same mistake again”? He doesn’t give a flipping rip or he would be there with the kids in tow to see their WHITE great granny before it is too late..but nope gonna wait until tomorrow.
Not buying any of this.
The real story here is that Drudge is throwing out a signal that he is watching this very closely.
