Ah but they co-opted the rhythms to push propaganda to our troops:

http://www.propermusic.com/products.asp?recnumber=169

“Swing and jazz music was ?unerwunschte musik? (undesirable music) for the Nazis who worked hard to suppress this music during World War II, while using it at the same time for propaganda purposes on the airwaves. This is the story of the battle they lost against this irrepressible music. 95 tracks are included in this 4 CD set which comes with a 60 page booklet crammed with information about this fascinating period. THIS CD SET IS NOW IN SHORT SUPPLY AND WILL BE DISCONTINUED WHEN CURRENT STOCK HAS BEEN EXHAUSTED.”

PS Proper has a lot of boxed sets on rock and roll, texas swing, jazz, swing, and now they are getting heavy into bebop jazz collections.

Sound quality is alright for the price ($5 for a single CD through Half Price Books and other retailers, $18 for a 4 CD boxed set). Some of the audio appears subpar to me. But on the whole, they are a decent bargain.

"Ahhh Bach!"

I showed the picture of Radar to my wife this evening. Not Marge. The other one. Anyway, she tolerates my hobby of posting 70-year-old articles on Free Republic but she does not believe it is an indicator of complete mental health, if you know what I mean. She figures I do not pose a threat to myself or others so as long as my behavior is more or less normal in other regards she goes along with it. Anyway, many years ago we watched the episode of M*A*S*H where Radar is trying to score with an intellecually advanced nurse and Hawkeye gives him pointers. For some reason "Ah, Bach" stuck with us and the wife repeats it whenever J.S. Bach enters a conversation. So when I showed her your post she saw, just for a moment the great benefits obtainable at Free Republic.

Now excuse me. I have to go take out the trash.

10/28/38 Update

Not long after Munich Ribbentrop journeyed to Rome. His mind was “fixed” on war, Ciano noted in his diary of October 28.

The Fuehrer [the German Foreign Minister told Mussolini and Ciano] is convinced that we must inevitably count on a war with the Western democracies in the course of a few years, perhaps three or four . . . The Czech crisis has shown our power! We have the advantage of the initiative and are masters of the situation. We cannot be attacked. The military situation is excellent: as from September [1939] we could face a war with the great democracies.

I see that there is an ad for the famous Keen’s Chop House, then in business for 53 years. I had dinner at the fine old pub style restaurant about 50 years ago, and it is still there. It is famous for mutton chops, and was originally a theatrical type place, from the time that NY’s theatre district was based in Herald Square, not Times Square.

Good catch. I see that it was also an "interesting rendezvous of celebrities."

Resteraunts come and go in the blink of an eye, but when somebody comes up with the right combination of factors - location, menu, kitchen talent, etc. - it can go on forever.

What’s a milk bar?

I don't know. I am not sure I want to know.

Thank you sandyeggo. Islander7 recommended this route yesterday but you beat me to it.

Everyone, this is what a few New Yorkers heard for the first time anywhere on Nov. 5, 1938, performed here as a tribute to New Yorkers on Sept. 14, 2001. The last day of the proms. Very moving. You made me late for work but it is worth it.

I see there is also a rocked version of Adagio on Youtube. There should be a law against that. First offense - severe scolding. Second offense - casting into outer darkness where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.

I'll let the jury decide:
