Mike, what happened? You pulled a "Walter Payton won't get the ball in the red zone during the Super Bowl" moment on us! My wife is an Illinois native. She made it clear to me that had he ran for Senate in 2002, Obama wouldn't be our problem today. Oh, the grief, Mike, the grief!
This might have been a completely different year.
McCain vs. Hitlery?
/hand-wringing, garment-rending, teeth-gnashing
I said, of course that would have meant Hillery would have been the nominee. As much as I hate Hillery, I would prefer her over Obama anyday, if she would have won. Actually, I think she was so polarizing, she wouldn't have won the general. Just like I don't think Obama will win the general either. Enough people will come to their senses once they're faced with the ballot.
President Ditka? Putin, Chavez, and Amedenijad would have been quaking in their boots!
He would have had to take a pay cut.
I saw Da Coach stumping with Palin in PA on Friday.
Mike was a football player, a football coach. He was not inclined to spend his days knocking heads with a bunch of idiots and punks in the US congress. He did not want the headaches. I don’t blame him. I would not want to go up there with those pukes either.
This might have been a completely different year.
______
Yup. McCain might have picked Huckabee.
Yeah, Ditka is one of the most lovable characters in American (and Illinois, Western Penn) sports history. The thought of Mike Ditka kicking our enemies’ a**es as a President is a fun fantasy! I love him enough to know his heart condition might not allow for the amount of frustration the thick-headed libs in Congress would have brought. I really didn’t want him to run, only because I didn’t want harm to come to him. If his heart was OK, there would’ve been no reservations. Go Iron Mike! I sensed in the rally in PA that he may want to persue a seat in 2010, so if 0bama loses, Coach may want to give it a shot. Maybe an appointment? Illinois is in bad, bad need of some real leadership and positive influence right now. The bunch of goons running the show in Chicago politics need to be defeated.
He was making good money, popular in Chicago and on TV. The world was his oyster. The timing was off.
‘04. I remember this because I was flying in to Chicago for a fraternity convention the day, as it turned out, that Da Coach bailed. Had I known the state GOP was going out of state for a nominee, I might have crashed at the IIT chapter house and pulled papers myself.
He would have won, handily. Celebrity nearly always trumps all other factors in elections, and Obama was NOT a celebrity as the time, but Ditka was, and is.
The primary numbers for the 2004 elections tell a different story.
A total 706423 Republicans voted in the 2004 primary. as a comparison, Obama by himself pulled 655,923 in RAT primary votes.
George Ryan was already being investigated. A number of his aides had already been convicted
Republicans had already worn out their welcome by the 2002 state elections
Regardless of celebrity, Ditka would have had to pull a spit load of democrats, especially from cook county, and that wasn't going to happen.
