The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.
And what’s he going to do if they don’t? Public schools, I could see where it might be used as a requirement for graduation. Private schools...how is he going to impose this on them?

Perhaps he’ll “encourage” them by threatening SS. They can either “choose to serve” or they can pay an added tax from their checks.

I guess this part of the Constitution is flawed, per Hussein.

Maybe through some type of accreditation process where the degrees would not be accepted by state funded, or Ivy League, universities. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

It’s 50 ANNUAL hours of service in grades 7 to 9 and 10 to 12 (middle school and high school).
That’s 6 years of 50 HOURS PER YEAR, 300 hours total.
Then 100 hours PER YEAR in 4 years of college = 400 hours.
700 hours total = 87 workdays
But it’s the requirement over 10 YEARS that is bothersome, because it’s enough time to teach this generation who it is that actually owns their lives (the government).

Might want to run that by your neighborhood Commissar, but you’re right — probably not. Nor would involvement in your church, either.
Don't worry - he'll make it so expensive to attend private schools that they'll wither on the vine for lack of students.
Besides, when has the left ever allowed the Constitution to get in the way of their agenda? I think he misspoke back in '01 on that infamous PBS interview. What he really meant was the courts haven't addressed the issue of what YOU must provide the government!

BO can say require. but ultimately schools are under local and state control and funding. So those programs can only be implemented if local people get them included in cirriculum.
A good place for grassroots resistance starts locally.
