Can the Dems Reinstitute the "Fairness Doctrine"?
MSM | 11/9/2008 | self

Posted on 11/09/2008 8:35:55 AM PST by dbacks

Considering the level of hate and support offered up by the MSM during the Bush era is it really possible or likely that the Dems will be able to pass a version of the "Fairness Doctrine" that will kill talk radio?

what would they have to do to get past a concerted fight at the Supreme Court?

What examples of 'hate' could they bring that are not countered by the comment to kill Henry Hyde and his family?

Comments please-

Change the debate. Insist that the liberals embrace Darwinism.

Only the strongest survive. In media, the conservative talk shows get the ad revenue. They deserve to survive. The MSM is bleeding ad revenue. They should be killed off.

Despite bankrupting talk radio, and in this economy, I think they will do this. The tighter the strangle hold on thought, the less conservatives will be able to make a comeback. They don’t want to defeat our ideas; they want to anhilate out our voices while at the same time lying about how they are standing up for fairness—every tactic is fair game to them.

If we stand by and do nothing, then we deserve to lose all our liberties.

They can and will reinstitute the unfairness doctrine.

Why do you thing that the Drive-by media wanted the RATS back in control.

With a Fairness doctrine in place it squelched dissent for the liberal orthodoxy.

In short, I doubt it. And while there are some quite vocal about wanting to do so, in reading between the lines I just don’t think they want to beat that hornet’s nest. It would take years to just get through the lawsuits that would result.

Have you taken a look at the composition of the new Congress? You bet they can. And will.

Then don’t participate in them. Look, right now after getting the crap kicked out of us in this election; facing massive socialist inroads to include earnings redistribution, nationalizing 1/16 of our market (health care) and an open and gleeful attack on free speech, I need the fellowship of other conservatives. Articles and media stories are fine, but times like these call for private voices to raise up. We need this like we need air to breathe.

Perhaps the moderators will create a high profile page link for Vanities displayed prominently on this forum page. That should keep all of us content.

The “Fairness Doctrine” was a regulation. Let’s see how it pans out now, attempting to limit political speech. If anyone thinks that this can be implemented again. directed purely at their conservative opposition, without shutting down Democratic Underground, Daily Kos, Huffington Post and a whole host of other liberal mouthpieces, they’ve got another thing coming.

.....If we stand by and do nothing, ....

Big talk. Exactly what do you propose to do?

The standing by and doing nothing is the way things are done by conservatives. They bitch and moan but in the end are cowards and afraid to leave their keyboards to act.

The libs will take probably several steps to silence talk radio and the new media. Rest assured they will try. Various things, from trying to set talk radio up as some type of “hate speech” to using rule making within the FCC to impact them. The lying-title of the Fairness Doctrine, has too much visibility now for them to try it first, IMHO. Informed Americans know exactly what it is intended to do and its impact on the First Amendment. We shall see — but whatever they do, God help America, it will eventually be testing in the SCOTUS and be defeated as these socialists need to be defeated in the next few elections.

Guess this means Rush Limbaugh gets equal time on ErrAmerica. Maybe an hour of Michael Savage on PBS every week to offset Moyers.

I really doubt that the Dems will use a new version of the "Fairness Doctrine" to try to kill off talk radio. Here are a couple of reasons why:

1. Assuming Kennedy is not a complete idiot, there are at least 5 votes on the Supreme Court that would rule any such law as a violation of the 1st Amendment. There might even be more votes than that.

2. Any law that they write would have to be aimed at balancing liberal and conservative viewpoints on talk radio. In response to this the radio networks would toss the marginal right wing shows and replace them with (what would turn out to be) marginal left wing shows. Rush would remain #1 and he would have a little less competition from the right so he would grow stronger not weaker.

Explain to me step by step how the fairness doctrine would destroy talk radio.

Rush has been a listener success because Rush knows how, especially in the past, how to get and hold listeners.

Are you saying that when he really may have one hand tied behind his back he can't succeed and prosper?

Well Bert, I’m not. I’m willing to March on Washington. I’ve talked to Mike Pence’s office in Washington about his bill to keep Broadcasters Free. Pence is a congressman from Indiana and a former talk radio show host. Congressman Pence is THE PERSON we should look to in order to find out what we can do at the local level. I also stopped Congressman Andre Carson’s staffers outside the polling place where I voted. I specifically told them WHY their candidate did not get my vote: i.e. His support of The Fairness Doctrine.

So far my efforts may not have made any impact, but as you say it beats bitching and moaning. And sir, if we all sit back and do nothing, then we do in fact deserve to lose our free speech. I don’t have Congressman Pence’s contact info at my fingertips or I’d pass it on. He does in fact have a website which I would encourage EVERYBODY to visit. Google it. He does list his contact info.

I’m not sitting back and bitching and moaning as you implied. I’m willing and able to fight to keep our speech free. I’m rutterless at this point looking for key people to form the grass roots effort. But if my posts have encouraged even one person to lean more about this threat, and if they in turn talk others into learning more about this, then I have been successful. I’ll continue to fight back until an organization is formed. At that time, I’ll join and I will do whatever is necessary even if its just stuffing envelopes. What will you do?

Perhaps we can get shortwave radios and huddle around them at night, getting our news from BBC and Rush broadcasting via “Radio Free America” from a bunker in Canada or Eastern Europe

What the left will do is complain to every station every time Rush says something. It doesn't matter if Rush says "Today is Monday", the left will issue formal complaints to the stations that they didn't have other viewpoints on what day of the week it is. The idea will be to make it so difficult and expensive for the stations to deal with these complaints that they just give up and put on sports talk.

Well now, aren’t you special!

I consider this a critical issue and I believe it is completely relevant to Freeper interests. Are you?

Talk Radio will be shut down in this way. Local boards will be set up to promote local programming. These boards will be stacked with leftwing hacks. Local programming will bump a lot of popular talk shows. Station managers will not be able to take the financial hit and will convert to some non-controversial format, such as all news, sports talk, or Latino music.
