Word For The Day, Thursday, November 13, 2008 - horripilation
dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | 13 November 2008 | secret garden

Posted on 11/13/2008 4:31:42 AM PST by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

horripilation \haw-rip-uh-LAY-shuhn; ho-\, noun
the act or process of the hair bristling on the skin, as from cold or fear; goose flesh

Example sentences:
There are a few things capable of sending an icy horripilation through even the bravest man.
-- Who Will Provide Social Security?, Washington Times, June 11, 1996

This is not to say that the horripilation Iran's nuclear programme inspires is unjustified; nor is it to claim that no other state would seek to develop or maintain nuclear weapons if the official nuclear powers gave theirs up.
-- George Monbiot, Guardian, January 23, 2002

Whether you're a skeptic or a believer, Celebrity Paranormal Project is fascinating as a demonstration of physiological fear: dilated pupils, nausea, shallow breathing, horripilation, the mind-twisting power of expectation.
-- Vinay Menon, Out of body with Busey, Toronto Star, July 3, 2003

Etymology:
In 1623, from Latin horripilatio, from horripilare "to bristle" + pilus "hair"

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Hey...I will not even think of the Canberra nudist camp unless Robert goes with me for a Brazilian wax first!!
No, wait a minute - EVERYONE has to go for the wax.

Gotta be slick as a baby’s butt for that trip.

Typically the only people attracted to clothing optional (or even worse “anything goes”) parties are people who should always keep their clothes on!

Same meaning but this is more appropriate to the feeling I had when election returns came in last week.

My biggest concern is the effect on the judiciary with all the openings on appellate courts that were blocked with Bush in office. Not to mention the geezers at SCOTUS.

it is a huge concern and one of the left’s top goals. the court of appeals openings have been backlogged, waiting for this very opportunity, and those courts have much more of an impact even than SCOTUS, since the volume of cases they decide is MUCH greater.
