But Mr Menozzi hit the dog at such speed that it became embedded in the grille under the bonnet of his car.
It lay trapped in the Peugeot 207 and managed to cling on until the car eventually stopped 15 miles further on.
Miraculously, the pup survived the ordeal, escaping with just a broken leg and bruising.
It is now in a police kennel looking for a new owner.
A police spokesman said: "He's a very lucky boy. He was saved because he was hit so hard.
"Any softer and he would have bounced off the car and been crushed under the wheels."
Mr Menozzi had been driving at 70mph on a side road in Cozze, southern Italy.
The one-year-old dog survived by clinging to the car's grille
I hope the cops forced the driver to watch as they used a powersaw to help get the puppy out.
incredible!!
I love dogs.

If I'd have responded to that accident, I'd have called for the jaws of life ;-)
That precious puppy! I will bet there is a line waiting to be able to adopt this lucky dog.
I just do not understand people. I also hope the car was destroyed in the rescue.
LOL, me too.
I hope they cut his car from the trunk to the front and then spent some time chewing up the interior with the saw.
Wow. That’s not exactly a small dog.
I guess Mr. Pup still has a few things left to do on this earth. Hope he finds a wonderful home.
That’s quite a dog.
After freeing the pup, they should’ve stuffed that f**king heartless bastard into the f**king trunk and left him there to suffocate. I absolutely hate people who abuse animals.
The dog should not have been loose on the road in the frist place.
Amazing...
If you’ve ever been to Italy....
Well, let me put it this way, being OFF the road is no guarantee against being hit by Italian drivers, who tend to go anywhere, (sidewalks, paths, yards, piazzas, staircases, etc.) to get around traffic or to save time.
One of the greatest thrill rides I’ve ever had in my life wasn’t on any rollercoaster or such.....it was a taxicab ride in Rome during rush hour.
Aw, poor dog!
With people like this, they better be glad that they are facing God on judgment day and not me, because there is at least a chance that God will show them mercy (don’t see how, but whatever)...
I’d love to adopt that dog... I hope he finds a good home... if they don’t find a home for him, I’ll take him.
(My wife is going to kill me when she reads this... I have a soft spot for our canine friends.)

I do too. lol Never had a dog, always cats and ferrets. But, 2 years ago I got my first puppy and fell in love!
This lucky dog was in Italy, so I can’t get him. I sure hope they find a wonderful home for him.
And, again, I hope the driver’s car was destroyed and his insurance won’t pay! What a cruel person.
