As mentioned a couple of weeks ago in Bob Dylan :: After The Crash (1967-1970), back in 2005 AD posted the unreleased tracks from Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash’s 1968 sessions. With the Legacy reissue of Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison and the October release of Bob Dylan’s Bootleg Series Volume 8 (more on that later) a re-post felt both warranted and appropriate.

This is a true peice of Americana -- two iconic masters of their craft conversing with one another via song. Recorded throughout 1969 on three separate occasions, these recordings mark an important historical collaboration between two American poets/musicians. Even a casual fan of either artist should at least give these a cursory listen. Great stuff.

CBS studios, Nashville, TN February 17-18, 1969. Ryman Auditorium, Nashville, TN May 1, 1969. Nashville Skyline: The quadraphonic mixes

I just clicked on the I Walk the Line link and my audio player opened and played the mp3. I also downloaded the file via the command line. Don't know what's different on your machines.

At my Father’s funeral in July, the choir sang a song I was not familiar with. They did a good job on Life’s Railway to Heaven and I recently decided to look it up on Youtube.

There was a version with Johnny Cash, the Carter Sisters, Lester Flatt and The Nitty Gritty Dirt band all together. I had forgotten just how good Johnny Cash could sing. Now I can’t get the tune out of my head.

Saw a documentary on Tom Petty the other day. I had no idea that Mr. Cash had sung I Won’t Back Down. They played part of the Cash version after Petty said after listening to Cash’s version that Petty almost wished Petty had not recorded the song as Cash sang it with such conviction. Petty Cash—LOL.

‘Nashville Skyline’ was the first Bob Dylan album I ever bought (1969) and ‘Girl from the North Country’ with Johnny Cash was a favorite from that album.

Dillon said that when he thinks of Cash he thinks of him as a religious figure. I thought this interesting especially seeing that Johnny had played with Dillon often before he became Dillon. I couldn't quite make out if he was implying that Johnny had a ‘religious’ sort of influence on him or (I am sure there are many ways to view this) as Dillon saw him more as a religious man. Either way Cash was a man of great admiration to the great musicians that play with him.

About 10 years ago, I saw a show for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (whatever). Cash was joined on stage for a ‘jam’ with several other musicians. John Mellencamp went up to the front of the stage and started acting like an ass. He screwed up the words to Ring of Fire and instead of just hanging back, kept jumping around Cash, who looked like he wanted to KILL Mellencamp.

I don’t think the Cougar knows how close he came to getting knifed on stage.

I find the reactions of musicians to Johnny Cash covering their work interesting.

Trent Reznor has said it means more to him than grammies and other industry accolades. Chris Cornell has said it is the the thing he is most proud of in his career.

Just goes to show the giant that Johnny Cash is because those two (and Tom) aren't lacking in talent or accolades.

Soundgarden's Rusty Cage

Johnny Cash's version with the Heartbreakers backing him up

Nine Inch Nail's Hurt I have to say It is amazing how much Reznor looks different now. Probably a good thing that he isn't quite as in touch with the emotion of this song now.

Johnny Cash's Hurt Probably the most affecting music video ever. I think it is like Brian's Song no matter how tough you are it is OK to tear up for this.
