The Frobidden "SNL" Bailout Skit
SNL ^ | Unknown | SNL Writers

Posted on 11/22/2008 3:06:52 AM PST by Robert DeLong

Apparently, SNL did a "Bailout" skit, which has created some incredible problems for NBC.

They have pulled the video and apparently gone after anyone who put the video out there, because the video has all but disappeared off the internet.

It was up on multiple sites and virtually all the copies are gone now.

There are a few new "edited" copies on the net.

Now how much power would you have to have to pull something from the entire internet?

Here is one copy still out there:

I can see why NBC has tried to erase all memory of this skit, because SNL nailed it on the head.

Nope, even that one is edited. If you watch the video at the link you provided and then find the transcript, you’ll see that something Fred Armisen said (he’s playing Barney Frank) is not there. If I can find the original FR thread on this I’ll post back for proof.

But it did still include the later-edited caption “People Who Should Be Shot”.

Love the Soros Tag “Owner of the Democratic Party”.

Check this...

We think we have the original, but do we? Go to 6:09 in the video and see if the part below in red is in your video. It's not in mine and I thought I had the original too.
Frank replies: “Not at all. There's an important social contract here. When deceitful housing lenders play by the rules, and bribe members of Congress with campaign contributions, they have a right to expect that we will protect them from losing money. Now let me say something else here. Many of you are probably wondering, where did that $700 billion missing from our economy go? To help answer that, let me introduce our good friend, billionaire hedge fund manager, George Soros...”

Why the panic to edit or remove it, is it a ‘truth hurts’ issue or a ‘slander’ issue?

It’s both. However, NBC did not have to edit it nearly as much as they did, in order to protect themselves from being sued for slander.

Good question, unfortunately I do not have the answer. I suspect it trampled on the wrong toes though, whose I am not sure of. George Soros’s toes?

Apparently is was this:

There's an important social contract here. When deceitful housing lenders play by the rules, and bribe members of Congress with campaign contributions, they have a right to expect that we will protect them from losing money.

Not even a billionaire is going to sell the idea that a political sketch on a parody show is "slander". Esp. since anyone who has a billion bucks is perforce a "public figure".

Considering how everyone roughed up Sarah Palin, I'd rather have the billion dollars and the sideswipe from SNL. Nice problem to have.

Also missing was this:
"Now let me say something else here. Many of you are probably wondering, where did that $700 billion missing from our economy go?"
- Fred Armisen as Barney Frank

I hae to be honest, I cannot find a transcript on the web that has this line you mention:

There's an important social contract here. When deceitful housing lenders play by the rules, and bribe members of Congress with campaign contributions, they have a right to expect that we will protect them from losing money.

It figures. The one time SNL really goes after the dems, they later decide to delete any vestige of it.

Actually, that was the only part remaining. If you watch it again, you will see him go from 'Not at all' to the quote you cite, eliding the rather wonky line about deceit, which I would have cut for not being funny, even though it did savage up the skit.

For me, the saddest part of this is that this demonstrates graphically to anyone not already regrooved exactly how much contempt the Democrats have for the rest of us (including run-of-the-mill Democrats) and how oblivious most people are to it. They paraded it in public just as blatantly as in this skit and the actual language used at the time was only gentler, not different in implication. People still didn't notice or decided to construe it agreeably to their own preconceived bloated overestimation of their own intellectual worth. That includes the audience who sat there and sort of reacted to the skit. It was aimed directly at them. I wonder how many of them recognized that?

Pretty sad, IMHO.

“Frobidden”

Is that a J.R.R. Tolkien character?

(Spell...check...anyone...?)

Anyway, Soros is going to cast a longer and even darker shadow over the First Amendment, by the looks of this.

GE owns NBC. GE is going hat in hand to Congress asking for bail out money (even though it has a healthy balance sheet) because it wants its lending division declared a bank.
