Infant attacked, killed by dog

An infant was killed Monday morning in south Tulsa after he was attacked by a dog,
police said.
Officer Jason Willingham said a two-month-old baby boy was mauled by either a young
black Labrador or a small pug at the boy’s home in the 2900 block of East 102nd Street.
Officers were notified about 10:30 a.m. The child was pronounced dead at the scene.
Willingham said the baby’s mother and grandmother were home at the time, but nobody
was in the room when the attack occurred.
“The child was left unattended in a swing,” he said.
Police are unsure what caused the dogs to attack or which dog killed the boy. Both dogs
were placed in a shelter.
Willingham said he is not sure what, if any, charges would result from the case.
“It’s just a very tragic set of circumstances,” he said. “It’s a very hard situation to
investigate.”

Officials with the Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh
has confirmed a one year old girl whose identity
hasn’t been released, was pronounced dead there
this afternoon. She was mauled by her family’s
dog this morning at Laurel Hill Cemetary in
Millcreek. She was severely injured , transported ,
to Hamot and then taken to the Children’s
Hospital in Pittsburgh. The dog, described as a
sheepdog mix, was pursued and killed by
Millcreek Police The girl’s mother was also bitten
by the dog and taken to Hamot. Her injuries are
not life threatening. She is expected to be treated and released.

SANTA ANA – Junior, the 6-year-old
chocolate Lab taken from his homeless
owner Wednesday, was declared vicious
Monday morning by animal control officers.
“Because the dog is being declared as
vicious, the dog cannot be legally made
available to the public for adoption,” said
Cpl. Jose Gonzalez of the Santa Ana Police
Department. “But the dog will be made
available to be taken and cared for by
someone who meets the requirements.”
Animal control officers took Junior after he
bit the pants of a groundskeeper at the Civic
Center. Junior and his owner, Dennis Davis,
have lived on the Civic Center lawns for the
past five years and have befriended many
Civic Center employees, who give them food
and take Junior to the veterinarian.
Junior had been cited for two biting
incidents involving children. Other citations
included barking, being tethered to public
property and lunging at a passerby.
A new owner would have to prove that he or
she has a completely enclosed dog run, a
“Beware of Vicious Dog” sign and $100,000
in liability insurance.
The Santa Ana Municipal Code states that
the owner of a dog that has been declared
vicious has 10 days to appeal the vicious
dog designation.
Gonzalez said that animal services officers
are researching whether Davis can file an
appeal, because he surrendered the dog to
the officers Wednesday.
Charlotte Freeman, who works in the court
system, tried adopting Junior last week and
has been trying to help Davis get him back.
Freeman said she’d look into the appeal
process to see if she can help Davis.
“I’ve pretty much given up trying to get him,”
Davis said Monday. “But if someone would
adopt him, I could at least see Junior.”

Davis said that one woman approached him
and offered to take him and Junior to Mexico,
where she could find him work. “I’d be more
than willing to do that if that’s the only way I
can get Junior back,” Davis said.
A Davis friend, Paul Skerston, a lawyer from
Fullerton, helped Davis submit a form to the
Orange County Animal Center on Saturday
evening explaining that Davis surrendered
ownership of Junior under duress and that
he wants him back. They haven’t heard yet if
Davis has regained ownership of Junior. If he
does, Skerston said she’ll help Davis appeal
the vicious dog declaration.
“Preferably we’ll have Dennis get his dog
back, if not, at least I hope to get the dog a
home,” Skerston said.

Police: Dogs mauled Titusville woman to death

TITUSVILLE — Two Titusville dogs are likely to be euthanized after they mauled and killed their
owner, Titusville police said Friday.
Police said 74-year-old Loraine May was found dead at her Elliot Avenue residence by her son after
he returned from work Thursday afternoon. She had been dead for several hours. Police said she had
been bitten on her arms, shoulder and neck.
An autopsy by the medical examiner’s office Friday concluded that she had died of multiple blunt
trauma caused by two of her dogs. The final medical report and the investigation can take up to 12
weeks, police said.
The two dogs – a golden retriever and labrador mix and an Australian shepherd – are being held by
Brevard County Animal Service and Enforcement.
“Euthanasia will be the most likely course once we complete our investigation,” said Bob Brown of the
animal service. The family has authorized the dogs be destroyed, police said. May had another dog at
the house, a cocker spaniel named Jolie, but police said it was not involved in the attack.
A neighbor said that the labrador mix was an aggressive dog and did not get along with the two other
dogs. “I believe it was segregated in another room,” said Milton Farrow, who lives two doors from
May’s house.

Puppy dies from reported dog attack at Bow Wow Beach

Stow — Bow Wow Beach will have a separate entrance to the small-dog area after police say a puppy was attacked and
killed by a dog there this weekend.
A 4 1/2 month-old Maltese/poodle mix was killed June 7 after being attacked by a standard poodle, according to Stow
Police.
Lt. Rick Myers said the department received a call from Stow resident Jane Gsellman, the Maltese/poodle’s owner, June 9,
and the incident was referred to animal control officer Ed Young.
According to the police records department, the incident report was not complete by press time. No charges had been filed at
press time.
“I don’t recall any [other] incidents where a dog has been killed at the park since it opened,” said Myers.
Gsellman claims a standard poodle charged her from behind while she was holding her dog, Sophie, knocking the puppy out
of her hands. She claims the standard poodle bit Sophie on the neck.
After unsuccessful attempts to separate the dogs, Gsellman said the dogs were finally separated and she took her dog to a
veterinarian emergency room, where the dog died.
“The owner [of the standard poodle] came with me to the emergency room,” said Gsellman. “The owner was very upset. We
were both just totally devastated.”
The standard poodle’s owner could not be reached for comment by press time.
Gsellman said she was making her way to the small-dog area of the park during the incident, explaining that section of the
facility cannot be accessed without first going through the large-dog section.
Stow Parks and Recreation Director Nick Wren said the parks department plans to install a separate entrance into the smalldog
area that “would be adjacent to the small-dog area.”
“You would have to go through the large-dog area for about 20 yards to get to it,” he said. “It’s about as close as we can get
it.”
The small-dog area, on the other side of the park’s main entrance, allows dogs that are 35 pounds or less.
Wren called what happened to Gsellman’s dog “an unfortunate incident.”
“As seen on a daily basis at the dog park, many pet owners consider their dogs as integral members of the family,” he said.
“We understand that the loss of a pet is very devastating and we are very sorry for the owner’s loss.”
Wren urged individuals to follow the park’s rules at all times, stating visitors use the park at their own risk and that dogs
with a history of dangerous behavior are prohibited.
“Our goal has always been, and continues to be to provide a safe and wholesome recreational outlet for all pets and their
owners that visit Bow Wow Beach,” he said.

The park, a 7.5-acre fenced-in park with a 3-acre lake, includes a sandy beach and grassy areas for dogs to run.
The facility opened last summer in Silver Springs Park and recently had been named by “Dog Fancy” magazine as one of

TONOPAH — A Tonopah woman is recovering after being attacked by a pack of stray dogs.
It happened right outside her home near 331st Avenue and Baseline Road.
Almost a year ago, Regina Fanire and her husband moved from 75th Avenue and Indian School Road to
the Tonopah area for some peace and quiet.
Bite marks remain after dog attack
Little did they think that their peaceful neighborhood would become the target of an attack.
“Most frightening thing I’ve ever been through in my whole life,” Fanire said.
A daily chore turned into a harrowing experience for Fanire. Just last week she grabbed her mail and
turned to head back toward home.
“Something grabbed my elbow, yanked me down on the ground,” she recalled.
Shielding her face with her arm, she tried to fend off her attackers — a pack of four stray dogs.
“When it went for my throat, I realized for sure I was being attacked,” Fanire said.

Screaming and shouting, she dragged herself to the front door, managed to unlatch it and repeatedly rang
the doorbell.
Her pitbull came to her aid.
“This is my hero,” she said about her dog. “He suffered a few bites on his nose, face and ears.”
Her hero’s name is O.D., which originally stood for Outdoor Dog. He was a stray as well. Someone
dumped him by the road and Fanire nursed him back to health.
And you can bet after this experience, she’s changed his nickname to O.D. for On Duty.
Twenty-six bites later, four hospital visits and plenty of R & R, Fanire is starting to recover.
She’s not angry with the stray dogs, but rather their selfish owners.
“I’m not mad at the dogs,” she said. “I’m mad at whoever is dropping dogs off to starve and die out here.
They wouldn’t be running in packs. If you can’t care for a dog, take them to a shelter, turn them in.”
Animal Care and Control sent out officers to take a report and investigate the attack. They have since
made daily rounds in that area to find the stray dogs. They have impounded one of them.

Police are investigating after a Lexington baby was killed by the family dog.
The attack happened at around 3:50, Friday afternoon, at a home on Seven Pines Drive.
Police say the family’s Jack Russell Terrier mauled seven-week-old Justin Mozer while his mother
was in the bathroom, reportedly bathing another child.
The coroner says the baby was found unresponsive at the home and later died at the hospital.
Right now, the death is being ruled an accident and no charges have been filed.
There’s no word on Mozer’s funeral arrangements.
Funeral arrangments for Justin have not yet been set.

Dog attacks health worker

A local health department worker was reportedly bitten by a dog as she got out of her car at a residence on
Brushy Road Thursday morning.
Tammie Brooks of Mount Pleasant told Deputy Michael Thatch she was getting out of her car at the
Jeremy D. Traw residence at 487 Brushy Road when the attack occurred.
Thatch said he was dispatched to White River Medical Center to talk with Brooks about the incident, which
occurred around 10:15 a.m.
“I spoke with Mrs. Brooks and she said she was attacked by a brown and tan Bassett hound which knocked
her down and bit her on the left hand and on both legs,” Thatch said. “Mrs. Brooks had puncture wounds on
her left hand and multiple wounds on her legs.”
Thatch said he contacted the owner of the dog, who took the animal to a veterinarian clinic to be
quarantined and later put to sleep.
“Mr. Traw said the dog is normally kept in a pen, but had gotten out when the attack occurred,” Thatch
said.
Brooks was treated for her wounds and released from the emergency room.

Pomeranian attacking an
80-pound pit bull.
“They stand their ground,
those little dogs,” she said,
describing how one of her
relatives has a small
mixed-breed dog that charges her own pit bull and Labrador every time the
three dogs cross paths.
That’s basically what happened Thursday afternoon at a Sunset Avenue
apartment complex, where Garry Laffredi said he was walking his 2-year-old
pit bull Capone when a neighbor’s Pomeranian came running at them.
“(Capone’s) not a bad guy. He’s real friendly. He’s people friendly,” Laffredi
said. “He loves other dogs. (But) this little Pomeranian ran out and starts
biting him on the foot.”
Pomeranians, which are classified as Toy dogs by the American Kennel
Club, can be as small as three pounds and resemble a fox in appearance,
generally having a bushy orange coat and pointed ears.
Laffredi said the Pomeranian bit Capone’s foot hard enough “to draw blood”
also managed to nick Capone on the top of the head as he tried to pull the pit
bull away on a leash.
Eventually, Laffredi said, Capone “grabbed the dog and more or less set him
off to the side” before the two dogs were separated.
Citations issued
Animal control officers called to the scene reported that Laffredi told them
the Pomeranian also bit him on the hand two weeks ago, but he chose not to
report it at the time. The owner of the Pomeranian was issued four citations
for Thursday’s incident — failure to prevent a dog bite, owning a dog running
at large, not possessing a dog license and not having updated rabies shots.
Each citation comes with a $25 fine if paid within 30 days. Fragassi said in
cases of a first-time animal-to-animal bite with no current rabies shots, the
animal is not seized but the owner must have the dog checked by a
veterinarian for rabies after 10 days.
The owner of the Pomeranian declined to speak about the incident,
describing it as an unfortunate episode that she wanted to put behind her.

The CDC stopped publishing these statistics for a very good reason. Their “facts” came from media stories, not public records at hospitals, shelters, or any other accurate source. They admitted that the media focuses on attacks from pit bull type dogs, and many times misidentify dogs as pit bulls, either through sheer ignorance or for ratings.
To top that, the UKC lists the American Pit Bull Terrier the #2 most popular breed right now, and many of these dogs aren’t registered with them, or aren’t registered at all. And to answer a question posed earlier “what percentage of pit bulls attack”, compared to their population, 1-3%, which is the same for all dog breeds.
