.40 cal question - Glock? (Vanity)
11/28/08 | Self

Hello fellow freepers, I have a question to ask. I've been recently looking at some hanguns - specifically the Glock 23 and 27 and also a Taurus (all .40 cal). I'm looking for a home-defense weapon and I'd like to have the versatility to carry it as well. I love the feel of the taurus, but the smaller Glock is nice because you can conceal it easily.....

Does anyone have any suggestions?

This is a tough subject because there are so many handguns that are good for concealed carry. One may be perfect for an individual, but you may or may not stumble across it.

Concealed carry means lots of tradeoffs for me. First, it has to be a make and model of handgun that I can implicitly trust with my life. Second is maximum ballistic performance out of the minimum practical platform. After those two criteria are met, maybe I can get a choice of calibers.

My earlier choice was the S&W M60, a choice validated by generations of cops. Now I go with the Walther PPS in 9mm.

In the event I need to defend myself with this weapon, I decided 6 rounds of 9mm beat 5 of 40S&W. If size was of no concern, I'd go with my Glock 21. One reason I like the Walther is that, under the hood, it's just a skinny Glock, which is a known factor for me.

But for me. all handguns are a second-best choice. If I knew I was headed towards some armed unpleasantness, I prefer to stack the deck with all the firepower and technology on my side, in a form that I can master.

I don;t like the mini glocks.

Curious why. I am seriously fond my my compact G30 in .45, and have no problem whatsoever with my sub-compact G26. ... and I've got big hands.

Full disclosure: I only use the 30 for competition, and the 26 for carry...

I don’t consider the 30 a mini or sub compact. Just a Compact. It’s fine. I don’t own a sub compact / mini due fact I tried a few and the ranges and just didn’t like em. I can pack a 30 or 19 or 23 etc just as deep as a “mini”....

Personal preference in my case.....:o)

Even the whip / bark of the 239SIG in 357SIG is harsh for me for a small concealed PDW. I use the 40SW barrel for that.......

Standard rule.......handgun is for use until I can get to my rifle or shotgun.....:o)

Is the Walther trigger on yer new pistola like the one on their P22 target ? The double action on that is horrific on mine !

The trigger design (and most of everything else), is ripped off from Glock. It's certainly not a target trigger, but is fine for a defensive handgun. I've used Nanolube on it, and the trigger pull has gone down from 7lbs 6oz to 6lbs 6oz.

So my P22’s trigger is not the same on yer walther.....glad for that as you wouldn’t like that DA pull on the P22 at all.

I have been experimenting with this stuff for final lube after degreasing and cleaning etc .....krytox. Expensive yet thus far works well. No trigger gauge in hand so can’t tell ya the difference for pull weight. I use this stuff at work on o-rings etc and saw a modern marvels episode on lubricants one evening. I was unaware of the properties of the krytox for high temp and wear etc until I saw that show.

I've researched Glocks extensively over the last couple of weeks. What I've found online is that the G17 9mm is a legendary, and G21 full-size in .45 is also quite solid. Where Glock seems to have trouble is in the more compact frame, large caliber weapons.

Glock is one of the most durable weapons out there (you know what kind of torture test some enterprising soul has put up against his Glock 21). Right now, I am in head-over-heels love with the other most durable one, the H&K, esp. the P2000 in 9mm. That said, the other thing I really like about Glocks is that there are only 33 parts, and the owner can strip the gun out fully for maintenance/cleaning/repair, and put it back together with no special tools or tricks. That, combined with its durability, speaks volumes.

Sadly, I haven't taken much time to research Glock online. I've only shot multiple compact and subcompact Glock frames and calibers in IDPA competition over the last 12 years. I hadn't realized that I'd won expert class in the regionals with inferior firearms. I guess I need to spend more time with Google.

That said, I only carry Sig Sauer, and I have no idea (or concern) what kind of online reputation they have.

Holy cow, and I thought Militec was pricey!

If I didn't value your opinion, I wouldn't have ordered it.

Thank God it wasn’t GG&G. I’d have to set up direct deposit.

Militec-1 sample I got initally was free for the grease and lube. So impressed with the mans gift of that sample for “free” I placed an order that will last me my lifetime....:o) That is a good shop, a good product and a good man that runs that company. Can’t recommend that stuff enough. He’s headquartered right down the road from my old stomping grounds near Indianhead NOS, MD.

I bought an S&W Sigma .40 at Sportsmans’ Warehouse for $289. Nothing fancy but fits my hand perfectly and has 14+1 capacity. No problems so far.

Absolutely agree there Sqantos. Militec-1 is one of the finest substances out there for stress reduction. Great on machine bearings too.

For strictly home defence go with a .357.
If you want both home and carry, look for a “compact” .45.
And “compact” is subjective to each individual..

As I’m sure you know, FN makes the Hi Powers for Browning (Browning has never made any); however, the FN HPs are no longer being imported into the US. There are a fair amount of used Hi Powers available online, I would just prefer to see it in person first.

That’s odd. I didn’t realize I had such a rarity. I went to the FNH-USA website and they are no longer listed.

And the Browning dealers all tell me that they haven’t gotten any 9mm HPs in a couple years. In any event I would prefer one that’s forged and not cast and I think that change was in about 1983. I’m going to go to a gun show here next month and hopefully find one, if not I guess I buy one online before Obama gets in.
