Daredevil SAS man-turned-explorer Bear Grylls was being airlifted to South Africa last night after being badly injured filming a TV documentary in Antarctica. The 34-year-old adventurer broke his shoulder in a life-threatening fall and was said to be in ‘shock and agony’ from a serious fracture which left the bone protruding from his body. The accident happened at 11pm British time on Friday, and Bear’s insurance company arranged for his evacuation

He was in Iceland and he stated that a farmer left a dead sheep for him to eat. He grossly ate its eyeball to make his money for the show. Why couldn’t he save the whole sheep until he made a fire?

Or as Les said in one of his recent shows after catching a fish. “I could eat it raw, but why do that when I have a fire.”

Some of the simple things I always have on me are;

Smallest swedish steel modified w/ a O-Ring capsule for oiled cotton

Old style Swiss Army Champion, not the big champ hog. Victorinox.

CD Business Card w/ ICE data on it , acts as a reflective surface for signaling, carried in wallet.

Flat ACR whistle w/o a pea on key chain

Photon IIIS LED light on key chain

550 para cord shoe laces w/ fire whipped ends

Large & medium sewing needle, scalpel blade and 4 small fish hooks taped to an old credit card in wallet

Reynolds large oven bag folded in wallet for use as emergency water carrier. Stuff it into a sock and fill with water if your moving away from source.

I watched Bear in Australia. He climbed a tree to get to a single fruit with maybe 5 calories while expending 100. He drinks a little water from elephant poop when it has no survival value. I'd rather watch Andrew Zimmer eat bugs.

Yep, all the running and climbing are the last things I would do if I were out there. This isn’t the first time Bear has been hurt while filming. I think its among the worst injuries though.

Concidering new tag line: “I could eat it raw, but why do that when I have a fire.” What do you think?

I feel bad that he was hurt. I know he is a tough guy. I just find the show fake.

It is sad that he was hurt. However risky behavior such as he does routinely is likely to end with this result.

The difference is that Grylls highlights that ANYONE might be able to survive these elements in most cases. It is panicking in these situations that get people dead.

Good comparison. Bear travels WITH cameramen, so instant rescue is on hand. Les Stroud travels solo, with the production crew some distance away, not aware of his exact location. When Les sleeps in the forest in Grizzly or brown bear country, he is taking a large chance. The production crew might be doing a “Steve Fosset” search, looking for crunched up bones.

No grizzly bear is going to sleep up on Bear, surrounded by his cameramen.

Did someone say stupidity?

There are those who would say that I'm an authority on the subject.

I suppose I'd have to say that all stupidity that one lives thru is redeemable so long as it's stupidity that emanates from the brain rather than from elsewhere.

I think Les Stroud is very worth watching. I encourage my kids to watch it and to learn from it. Not so much for this or that technique, but for the survival, “I’ll get through this” mindset. In Stroud’s case, that is 7 days with no outside help, no food, no matches etc in terrains from desert to jungle to arctic.

The other guy Bear Grill is just a showoff surrounded by a camera crew.
