Computer Problem

Posted on 12/23/2008 5:55:03 PM PST by Labyrinthos

For the last three weeks, I have had difficulty accessing Free Republic from my office desktop computer. Although I can connect at times, more often than not, I get the the "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage," error message. I do not have a problem connecting with other websites

I am running Win XP/SP 3. I know my employer has not blocked access, because I own the business. I am also able to access Free Republic using other PC's on the office network, including my notebook PC. I have tried just about everything that I can think of including system restore; disabling firewalls, Spybot S & D, Adware, and Windows Defender; uninstalling Norton Internet Security 2009 (using the Norton Removal Tool and two different registry cleaners); clearing cookies, history, temporary internet files, and other cache files.

The only thing left that I can think of is that I have disabled many of the worthless "services" that run in the background and slow the system to a crawl and sometimes I kill one too many. However, I am unaware of any particular service that would effect access to s single website, as opposed to the Interet in general.

Any ideas?

Does your computer have a unique firewall the others don’t?

You seem to have cleaned everything there is to clean, so I have to assume that Google has hacked your PC.

Jokes aside, take a look in the tools and make sure FR wasn’t accidently added to your blocked site list. Crazier things have happened.

Oxymoron?

I’m not a computer geek, but there is something else to consider. At times I cannot get certain sites due to weather conditions and/or trunk conditions;so I go to another server to get the sites and/or to get to the sites in a more timely manner.

“Owning your own business” only goes so far in the New American Idol business environment being built for us. Has Rod Blagoyovich appointed Caroline Kennedy as your IT manager without your knowing it, and maybe you just haven’t gotten the memo?

Here's your problem...

...easily remedied by moving to Linux or Mac.

Maybe DNS?

The next time it happens, try opening a command prompt, and type:

ipconfig /flushdns

then hit enter, wait a few seconds, and the try reloading the page.

In this case, you're recommending the equivalent of a quadruple bypass operation for a case of indigestion.

Get real, please.

If the kell button is loose certain signifiers will transmogrify into micro-zots. Beware!

Get real

Exactly my point. No need to put up with Microsoft BS.

Most likely a flaky router between you and FR. Next time it happens run a trace route and see where it's dying. Open a command prompt and trace your route to FR's address (209.157.64.200) by entering - tracert 209.157.64.200 209.157.64.200 is FR's address.

I'll blame it on the spiked eggnog.

I would think the next thing to try would be an alternate DNS provider. DNS is the service offered by your provider that turns our “www.freerepublic.com” into an IP address. This service is usually put on overloaded servers, unfortunately.

I use OpenDNS, a free service, instead. They offer a much better service. Easy instructions at the link.

Easy workaround is to install another browser (like Firefox) and completely avoid IE.

I agree. It’s really pathetic and not a help at all to someone who is trying to make something quickly work.

Good point. And the new beta for Firefox 3.1 is considerably faster in rendering than the old one, which was faster than IE anyway.

It does. My firewall is part of Norton Internet Security 2009. I still had the same access problems, however, when I uninstalled NIS.

Some of us are too old or tired of advances to “change”....switching to Mac doesn’t cut it, so please cut the bullshit, and stay on topic. Thanks in advance.
