In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
jingoism • \JING-goh-is-uhm\ • noun
extreme chauvinism or nationalism marked especially by a belligerent foreign policy
Example sentence:
Albert Einstein was a pacifist who found German jingoism, with its ultra-nationalistic ideology and militaristic policy, so objectionable that he left his homeland in 1933, never to return.
Did you know?
"Jingoism" originated during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, when many British citizens were hostile toward Russia and felt Britain should intervene in the conflict. Supporters of the cause expressed their sentiments in a music-hall ditty with this refrain:
"We don't want to fight, yet by jingo if we do,
We've got the ships, we've got the men,
We've got the money, too!"
Someone holding the attitude implied in the song became known as a "jingo" or "jingoist," and the attitude itself was dubbed "jingoism." The "jingo" in the tune is probably a euphemism for "Jesus."
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

It was a vast disappontment that so many Americans heard the Obamarama jingoism of liberal promises and didn’t recognize the flatulent air about it for what it was: bullsh**.
Kinda hard to beat that.
I’ve been up 5 hours, am frazzled, irritable... and then I saw commericals for an Obama coin and an Obama plate. UUUUGH!
With Hilary and her Clintonesque jingoism, do you really think she was the best choice for SOS? After the results of the November elections I think the Republican party needs to look at the jingoism of the Reagan era, and get this country back to reality in 2012.

Liberals the world over condemn the invasion of Iraq as President Bush’s jingoism. In the same breath they demean the US for standing idly by and allowing the atrocities of Darfur and Zimbabwe to continue unimpeded.

Well, today’s liberals not only hate Jesus’ name - in any form! - and they certainly only respect (demand!) and hold dear the internal rule of the UN and EU groups, so I assume we’ll never see jingoism used about America again. Right?
And, as they keep destroying the economy, we won’t even have quarters jingoisin’ mah pocket as I walk down the street.
