Hello Fellow Freepers!
I am young and a bit naive when it comes to firearms but am interested in a good home defense shotgun. As I am well aware many of you have experience in this area I was wondering what recomendations you might have to Remington 870 express vs the Mossberg 500?
Almost no recoil, simple, rugged, and reliable almost to a fault.
They're not cheap, but they're worth every dime.
Factor in the low cost of .22 LR ammo and you can shoot all day for 20 bucks.

Price wise? You can get a 500 which will include a short barrel too for $150 +/-. This lets you shoot clays with the long barrel and switch to the short barrel for use around the home.
Mossberg is a fine shotgun and will do what you need it to for 1/2 the price (or more).
I have 2 12ga. and a .410 ‘camper special’
As others on the thread have said the gun you have for home defense should feel good in your hands. You are not likely find a shotgun that is comfortable to both you and your wife.
With a pistol you have a better shot at having a gun both you and your wife can use.
I personally have always tried to sway people away from shotguns as a home defense weapon.
Unless you practice frequently with the weapon indoors the length of the weapon is going to be a drawback. Walls doorways and post are difficult to maneuver around with a long gun unless you have practiced these moves.
Also a person with a long gun is easier to disarm because the barrel protrudes farther from the body than a pistol.
Despite what many people think the pattern from a shotgun at 10 feet (the longest distance a person is likely to be shot in a home) is only two inches. Not a great advantage over a pistol.
In a 9 mm you also get at least 10 rounds. In a shotgun you typically only get six.
In the close quarters of a building I prefer a pistol over a shotgun.
Re: (the longest distance a person is likely to be shot in a home) is only two inches
And you are basing this on?????
many stories I have read lately of break-in’s were most definitely at distances much greater than that.
I was gonna use “ seven Shells” but this is a shotgun story... probably will get the rem... either looks good to me... i already got a Dan Wesson CBOB... santa is a great guy !!
You might want to to try one of these!

Forgot to add....if shotguns are such a disadvantage, why does every squad car have one?
Most rooms in the average home are 16 feet or less in their longest dimension.
With the owner 2 feet inside the room and the intruder 2 feet inside the room that leaves 12 feet between them at most.
Typical new coverage rarely discusses distances between the intruder and the owner.
The real basis of my figure is from analysis of FBI reports on fatal shootings. Most fatal shootings are at less than 10 feet.
Yup, agree with you there. Stoeger coachgun loaded with 3” .00 buck, let go with both barrels.
Ihave two. One upstairs, and one down. I keep a mossberg 500 in my truck.
Is that Dan Wesson a .45 or 10mm?
My first live round is a slug. Chances are I'd have to shoot through a wall in my small house. Slug - Buck - Slug (reload) Buck - Buck - Buck.
I have a Ruger 9mm in the p89 model. I have shot thousands of rounds of ammo from all kinds of different ammo manufactures and never had a problem of any kind whatsoever.I can’t say the same for others I have owned. I guess that’s why its called the “AK47” of handguns.
Stay Safe!
Police are trained in their use, your average home owner is not and never will be.
Shotguns have a definite Intimidation factor but I am not going to bet my life on intimidation and I dont recommend that anyone else do so.
Why does my argument bother you? You seem to take this personally.
My dad has the P89 with a very squishy trigger. Worst trigger I ever shot. And then my horrible experience with my brand new P95 makes me think the only gun I would want to buy from Ruger is the one which started the company, the lastest Mark III.
.45... shoots nice.. perfect for those of us with smaller frames :)
Which Ruger 9mm has a “clip”? I thought auto-loading pistols had magazines.
Re: Police are trained in their use, your average home owner is not and never will be
It sounds as though the OP is taking an interest in their safety and will get to know the gun. You should not generalize when the genaralization is certainly not called for.
Re: Shotguns have a definite Intimidation factor but I am not going to bet my life on intimidation and I dont recommend that anyone else do so.
Shotguns will not miss their mark in the dark of 2AM. A pistol very well may several times over.
Re: Why does my argument bother you? You seem to take this personally.
Because, from the points I have listed above, you are not being factual.
I conflate the two when I probably shouldn’t.
Thanks, I’ll check!
