"They hit the door right here and the door flew open," says Mike Hasenei, standing outside his Elkridge home.
His wife, Phyllis, was watching television with her 12-year old daughter when members of the Howard County Police Tactical Team came through the door.
"They had guns pointed at us. You have 25 guys coming in here all dressed in black and all that we saw were their eyes, and they're screaming 'Hands in the air!'"
Members of the team were acting upon a tip that an assault rifle, magazines and hollow-point bullets stolen from a marked police car the night before may be located inside.
Adding insult to injury, when the search led police to a back bedroom where they encountered the familys dog, they opened fire.
Officers found no evidence of the stolen goods after ransacking the house.
At this point a complaint has been logged against the department, but Howard County Police aren't about to admit they were wrong or to apologize for their actions.
"No. We didn't find a weapon in this particular case, said Sherry Llewellyn, a spokeswoman for the department, but that doesn't mean that there wasn't good information that there were weapons there before we had a chance to get inside the house."
Now, Mike Hasenei is waiting on an Internal Affairs investigation into the raid before deciding whether he and his family will take the department to court.
"I'm not gonna sit down and let people walk all over me and say 'sorry' and walk out of my house."
Like that dog was there to do THEM harm!!!!!!!! These stories are becoming too commonplace. Not long ago in another town the mayors home was mistakenly raided and their two labrador retrievers were shot.
Okay, one of the articles mentions the mayor I remembered having his dogs shot, there was yet another case in Maryland last year earily similar to this story, down to wife and child watching TV, burst through door, shoot dog... nothing there... sounds to me like something is unusually wrong in Maryland.

not even funny... stupid, stupid comment to make on a thread like this.
Try doing a little research or asking questions before running off from the hip.

and that was in Maryland, too... there was another MD shooting dog case similar to this last year... something stinks to high heaven in that state.
For all the constant complaints about Bush, we didn’t have a Ruby Ridge or Waco or Elian Gonzalez on HIS watch! Nope, all that happened don the last democrats watch.. and where was Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, etc., when all that happened?
First of all, I don’t have blinders on. You don’t even know me. I was making a point that law enforcement isn’t exacly a safe job. It is a dangerous profession - so what if it isn’t the MOST dangerous according to some statistician. My husband was good friends with a couple of officers in the next county that got shot and killed, so to me, the statistics mean nothing. Second of all, I don’t have to deal with any situation. I’ve never had a SWAT team come barging into my house “for no reason,” nor do I know anyone who has had that experience, or ever would.
There was a situation around where I live a few years back similar to this situation, except no dog was killed. A man turns out had fired at the police officers and luckily they returned fire and killed the SOB. His family tried to make it look like the guy was completely innocent, as is usually the case, until the facts came out. The guy had a violent rap sheet a mile long. The only cops I know are good professional cops. And I know many. I’m certainly not blind to the fact that there are bad cops out there. I never said that there wasn’t.
And you’re damn right I’m proud of my husband’s service. That certainly doesn’t make me naive. Law enforcement, as I’m sure you will agree, isn’t an easy job. I just seen too many people on here (not you necessarily) that are grouping everyone in law enforcement together as bad people. That is never a good thing.
And by the way, if it turns out (which at first glance it seems like) these officers that killed the dog were in the wrong, then they need to be prosecuted just like anyone else. And my husband would agree with that. I will say that after 25 years of being a “beat cop” my husband did not have to shoot somebody, although he had to draw his gun a few times. It does seem that there are alot more “violent” confrontations going on today than even 10 years ago when my husband retired. But I’m simply not going to jump on the “all cops are bad” bandwagon. Things are not the way they were when my husband first started in law enforcement. I’m actually glad that he’s not working the streets anymore. He’s got a more laid back job now investigating felony domestic violence cases for the county prosecutor , which was always his favorite thing to do in law enforcement, but I still worry about him.
Well, now I feel bad for not mentioning timber cutters. Timber cutting is obviously the most dangerous profession on the planet. At least those I did mention, fishermen and construction workers, are well above cops when it comes to dangerous professions.
But when it comes to dying in the ‘line of duty’ we seldom here about timber cutters. They get no media frenzy nor parades. Yet without them, we couldn’t build our homes. A sacred place of privacy in our past.
yada yada yada
I’ve been to Australia and New Zealand ... in NZ is where I first saw a Border Collie and said that’s the dog for me. The field BC’s were thin and lanky, sort of what your dog looks like ... to me they’re the only dog ....
It’s just the idea of cops shooting the family dog without provocation ... they actually hunt the dog down to shoot it then leave saying “oops, our bad” ...
You are a damned disgrace.
Wow, you know how is it you people are making it out like I said that law enforcement is the most dangerous job? I don’t care about your statistics. I knew a couple of cops who got killed in the line of duty (both on traffic stops, both shot). I don’t CARE about the most dangerous jobs in the world. I was only making a statement that law enforcement is still a dangerous job. I’m not going to sit here all night and argue statistics with you.
Because I’m proud of my husband, that’s why. I know he’s not the “supposed” kind being talked about here. Just seems like too many people are slamming all cops and I want people to know that there ARE good cops out there. I shouldn’t even have had to explain that, but I will just for your courtesy.
Perhaps I slighted you with my initial response. The problem is you still don’t get it. This is not about your husband. Unless of course, he bogued up warrants and terrorized women and children killing the family pet. In this case, we are talking about him.
I’m agreeing with you and wondering what is wrong in Maryland that it seems this isn’t an isolated situation.
Very intelligent. I can see why you’re not in law enforcement anymore, IF you ever were to begin with.
