Your drivers don't match your motherboard.
Call 1(866) 234-6020 Phone Support for Windows XP
and let them do a "take control" of your computer to fix the problem (at no cost).

You'll probably need the disk that came with your computer new, after they get the hard drive to see the CD drive.

You may need to reinstall Service Pack 2.

I’m re-downloading SP2 as we speak..seems to me that this problem arrived shortly after SP3 was downloaded..could it be that SP3 overwrote SP2 files causing a corruption?

when did they start providing support at no cost? I thought they charged an arm and a leg for support..

When I had the problem 4 months ago,
they told me that Serice Pack 3 had caused the problem,
and they DIDN'T know that it wasn't compatible with so many motherboards.

Because it was their fault they repaired the damage at no cost.

But it took a lot of work, reloading my computer from factory reboot, on my part.

You should try the phone call first.

If you don't want the phone option, try the option.

Hours of Operation

This will also get you to a free repair, by them taking control of your computer.
But the phone call is easier.

called microsoft and they worked on it for 2 hours before declaring it a hardware problem even though it DOES play DVD’s..I don’t think it’s hardware because of this..

HP said they think it’s hardware but wouldn’t help me otherwise (the computer is out of warranty) other than to tell me to do a system recovery..

best buy thinks it’s software related (corrupted driver) because they were able to run a boot cd before the OS..

so, I think I’m going to run a pc recovery off the hard drive which will reload to factory including overwriting all drivers with fresh stuff..just gotta write down my outlook express settings so I know how to rebuild it..

if the recovery doesn’t help, then it has to be hardware related since all the drivers will be freshly loaded..

before I do that though, do you have any other suggestions?

Going back to factory specs is best, but don't download the copy of your hard drive from the backup, if it's got Service Pack 3 on it.

Back up your programs and files without windows, and not the complete hard drive, to download later.

I think it's software and a driver problem. Good luck.

I have all data and programs I’ve loaded backed up to an external drive..all I gotta do it move them to the redone c: drive, click the exe and there they go...I’ll reload SP2 but not SP3..I just have to make sure I don’t go online until I turn off auto updates..

I may need the CD for my sprint card for internet, which I’ve got and some other misc. stuff, but it’s minor at best..if I don’t miss it now, I won’t miss it on the reload..

I’m gonna do it Saturday when I have all day to mess with it..

Many thanks for all your help..

It wasn't much, just passing info.

The technician that help me the most was Anand Kumar R with Microsoft Windows Technical Support. You can e-mail him at v-6arunp@mssupport.microsoft.com.

Good luck.

well, I wiped the drive clean (destructive) and reloaded all my stuff..t’was a good thing since I got rid of a bunch of programs I d/l’ed couple year ago but never used, etc..etc..

I now have fresh drivers and so on, however, the problem still remains..I can play DVD’s but not CD’s..it’s got to be a hardware problem at this point..

Gonna order a new drive (hopefully they send install instructions) and put a new drive in..

I concur with the above posts. Time to buy a new drive.
