There really aren’t any special drivers for a CD drive. If your CD drivers are corrupted then windows is corrupted and needs to be restored or repaired.
Have you considered System Restore?
did that, went all the way back to november for the restore..can’t be repaired cause it won’t read the repair CD..
Since this occured post SP3, and dos and safemode are working it’s a third party that isn’t working with SP3.
Something like Dvix, Nero, Roxio, etc. look in the startup section of msconfig for any cd/dvd related programs uncheck them and reboot.
SP3 has caused lots of these type problems with third party software handlers.
The offending vendor should have a fix for these by now, if not you can always uninstall SP3 and turn off the auto update, or set it to prompt so it at least asks you if you want to do an update.
OK One more think Get the name and model number of your CD Drive. It should be easy to find in system information. Go directly to the manufactures web site for drivers or there is a web site that the name escapes me something driver forum that likely has drivers for free. The actual maker of the player {not HP} should have the needed drivers if the machine isn’t too old. If the player s several years old? Yea I’d replace it. But I got two players that are on my old Compaq Presario W/98 that are still ticking. You should be able to get good instructions on line to change it out from about any Techie forum if you search using your computers model number. HP’s are little bit more difficult than Compaqs or Dells based on the one I worked on. Just harder to get the old player out mostly.
I had this happen awhile back.
It took an XP patch to fix it (I called Dell).
Take a look here:

You'll probably have to do a total system restore, with the restore disk provided with the computer when it was new. It's the only effective way to get rid of Service Pack 3.
After going back to factory restore from the disk, tehn load up to Servcice Pack 2. Don't take any updates beyond Service Pack 2 for windows xp.
I had to do the same thing about 4 months ago. I highly recommend Norton Ghost 12.0 but do NOT update it.
I also recommend WD My Passport Elite Portable 250GB Hard Drive -Titanium to back up on.
I have a feeling the CD is cooked..I did step 3, the computer uninstalled, reinstalled, said everything was ok and ready to use, but still sees no data..somethin ain’t right but a new drive isn’t expensive..I’ll just replace the thing and fix it that way..
but I’m bookmarking that webpage..
I tried that earlier, but the CD won’t read the disk..I can’t use it nor can I do a repair..
I have all my valuable data (including e-mails) backed up on an external drive so there isn’t anything I truly lose by wiping the drive clean, except the PC won’t read the application CD..
My guess is a hardware malfunction. If its a desktop, you might want to open the box and jiggle the wires. But you probably need to replace the drive. You might want to pick up a used CD drive that works (doesn’t everyone have a closet full of old parts, or at least a friend that has such a closet) and plug it in. If it works, spring for a new CD/DVD.
Immediately use the F12 key to force the computer to boot up from the floppy drive. Do not allow it to boot up into windows from the hard drive. You only have about 12 seconds to do this when the computer turns on.
The other option is to call 1(866) 234-6020 Phone Support for Windows XP and let them do a "take control" of your computer to fix the problem (at no cost) provided you have Internet service and can get on line.
If you're not sure connect to this link.
Well, since he can't get his drive to work, it's not like he could download and burn a bootable disk.
Now, if he has a friend that has one, it would be a good test as to whether it's a software or hardware problem.
If he drops in a Ubuntu or Puppy and the computer runs fine, it's a Windows problem. If he drops in one, and nothing much happens, its a hardware problem. And it's a whole lot cheaper than Best Buy.
That happens to those who cheat at Fantasy Football...(running fast)
Windows explorer saw the drive, but properties showed no contents.
I popped the drive open, breathed on the laser eye, gave it a gentle wipe with the terry cloth belt on my bathrobe, and voila !
* things don't generally work out that simply in my world, hence this hopeful suggestion
ROFL..
it’s good to be the king..errr...commissioner...:)
So ... how’s the fix going?
I uninstalled SP3, cleaned the lens on the drive and the difference now is the light flashes on/off steadily, the disk is spinning up, but still can read no data..
