I saw this Amber Alert posted on a digital billboard on a surface street. I knew there was a good reason I like those things.....

There is a big difference between some deviant snatching a child off of the street and a parent taking his kid without legal authority. In this case, I think this is an abuse of the Amber Alert system.

Look up the case of Sean Goldman (bringseanhome.org) and perhaps you’ll feel differently about parents kidnapping their own children. Not to mention it sounds like the man beat the crap out of the kid’s mom, then took off with the kid. I’d say that’s a problem.

The real question is: is that parent a threat to the child? Even in your cited Goldman case, it doesn't appear to be so, so the Amber Alert wouldn't have been appropriate for that case either. The Amber Alert is supposed to be for emergency situations where the child is assumed to be in danger, not used as a mechanism to enforce legal disputes between parents. If the Amber Alert gets used for domestic disputes where the child is not in danger, people will stop giving a damn when they see one. In both cases, the situation breaks the law and is certainly heartbreaking for the parent who is missing the child, but we have no reason to believe the child is in danger, in which case the authorities should use their normal means for pursuing the case.

How do you know the child isn’t in danger? The father is alleged to have committed an act of violence against the mother. How do you know for sure what he will or will not do to the child?

He had visitation rights. If he had ever been deemed dangerous to the child, I would assume that the court would not have granted him those rights. Parents who want but don't have full custody snatch their children all the time. 99% of those times, the child is not in danger.
And just to let you know in case you didn't already, the link cited in the main post now reports that the man turned the kid in to a relative, who called police, so the kid is safe now, either way.

Bless you. I mentioned at top that I learned of this Amber Alert via the new digital billboards.
I’m certain you don’t have them in your locale, nor should you, however I think they fit in with city life just great.
Of course, there is hue and cry they are a blight....
