Census records, genealogical research show forebears of Obama’s mother owned slaves

A new twist to an intriguing family history - Census records, genealogical research show forebears of Obama's mother had slaves

Many people know that Democratic presidential candidate Obama Jr's father was from Kenya and his mother from Kansas. But, (quoting a Mar.2, 2007 report in the Baltimore Sun), "an intriguing sliver of his [Obama Jr.] family history has received almost no attention until now: It appears that forebears of his white mother owned slaves, according to genealogical research and census records.

" . . . The records could add a new dimension to questions by some who have asked whether Obama - who was raised in East Asia and Hawaii and educated at Columbia and Harvard - is attuned to the struggles of American blacks descended from West African slaves." Obama Jr's African forebears were slave traders

In the 18th century, Muslim slavers moved into the interior of Kenya for the purpose of exploiting blood rivalries between local tribes. Muslims encouraged warring tribes, Obama Jr's Luo ancestors included, to capture "prisoners of war" and sell them into slavery.

Kenya tribe leaders, also exported slaves and ivory that had been exchanged by Africans from the interior for salt, cloth, beads, and metal goods. The slaves were then marched to the coast and shipped to Muslim Zanzibar (an island South of Kenya), to be traded again.

African slaves and ivory became hugely profitable and Zanzibar Muslims grew rich on the trade. Slave trading continued despite the public outrage in Europe demanding an end to all slave trade.

The British, eventually brought their forceful anti-slavery message directly to the Muslim Sultan.

After years of pressure, the Sultan finally relented and agreed to ban slavery in 1847. It was not until 1876, 11 years after the American Civil War had ended, that the sale of slaves was finally prohibited in Zanzibar.

Does it matter? Yes.

Does it make sense? No.

There were thousands of black people who OWNED slaves. Their relatives want reparations from white people whose ancesters weren’t even living in the country at that time.

If slavery didn't exist, it would be necessary for the victim class to invent it.

No, YOU posted to ME your anti-Lincoln crap.

Drop it and it goes away..... magically. Keep it up and you get more.

I made a comment and I brought up Lincoln regarding Obama--YOU brought up all that other crap.

You're obviously a fan of revisionist history, but you look like an idiot when the history is right there on the thread.

You are not all-powerful, but if you didn't start this you wouldn't look so stupid right now. :)

I would suppose that by 1619 most of them owned one or more black slaves, that having become the fashionable thing to do hereabouts.

Your statement is patently false on several accouts. First, there were no white Europeans in Maine in 1598. The first Europeans didn't arrive in Maine until 1604. Second, it wasn't 'fashionable' to own African slaves in 1619 Maine, considering that the very first African slaves arrived in August of that year in Virginia. And lastly, I wasn't commenting on the slave-owning history of his mother's family. I was commenting on the slave-selling history of his father's family.

When it comes to reparations for slavery, Obama will be on the paying end - not the receiving end.

The first shots were fired at Ft Sumter at ships leaving, loaded with cotton, without paying taxes. That started the war.

Was that before or after the 34-hour bombardment of the fort which Confederate forces commenced at 0430 on 12 April 1861?

First of all you don't know what you're talking about. There were WHITE EUROPEANS at what is now Bar Harbor Maine in 1598. In fact, they celebrated the first Thanksgiving and, to top it off, a gentleman named Les Carbot wrote a play which they presented. By 1600/01 they'd moved across the Bay of Fundy to their new settlement at Port Royal, now Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~grose/portroy.html provides a fair amount of coverage of the venture POST 1603. Also notice the name Sable Island. This particular island had been in use on a regular basis by fishermen, etc., for a very long time ~ probably since the establishment of the shortlived Portuguese settlement in Labrador in the early 1500s.

There are over 30 pre-Jamestown WHITE EUROPEAN settlements along the East Coast, and only a couple of them have been subjected to intense archaeological examination.

BTW, the family legend maintained by the Klumph wing is that this first group at St. Sauveur were mostly Protestant with some Catholics, rather than the other way around (which turns out to be the case by 1604 after a good number of the first company had died in various mishaps).

Of interest, pretty much all of the folks setting up New France had close relatives among the commercial shipping interests in Spain who'd already been searching for American opportunities for most of a century. Those who were Protestant had relatives who'd abandoned France and relocated to England, the Nederlands, and Scandinavia, so it wasn't like Europeans had no idea where to go if they got here ~ but there weren't very many of them.

In 1613, Samuel Argall, Governor of Jamestown, sailed up to Port Royal and "scattered the settlement". He sent the French packing but he took others who were there back with him to Jamestown. Some of them show up in the 1621 census. Folks with similar surnames show up in the lists of passengers prepared by the Spanish. Muy interesante!!!

Yeah, the point is to make all this a non-issue. Obama wants it both ways. By showing the variety of his ancestry we neutralize the importance of it for political purposes.

Under the cover of darkness on December 26, 1860, Anderson spiked the cannons at Fort Moultrie and moved his command to Fort Sumter. South Carolina authorities considered this a breach of faith and demanded that the fort be evacuated. At that time President James Buchanan was still in office, pending Lincoln’s inauguration on March 4, 1861. Buchanan refused their demand and mounted a relief expedition in January 1861, but shore batteries fired on and repulsed the unarmed merchant ship, Star of the West. The battery that fired was manned by cadets from The Citadel, who were the only trained artillerists in the service of South Carolina at the time.

His red-diaper mother family used to own slaves adn his dady’s clan took slaves. Can we stop calling him “African American” and start calling him “Slaver-American”?

...and if the radical republicans had followed the lead of Great Britain and reimbursed slaveholders for their legal property, history would be significantly different...but that would have spiked their unconstitutional agenda to make it a government of the wealthy and corrupt, which buys its support from the poor and corrupt.
