Unless you have been living in a cave for the past month, then you must know that the most hated man in America is none other than Stephen Fowler of the ABC reality show, "Wife Swap." To get up to speed on Fowler's antic's, check out this video of some of the highlights from that show. Among the many "charming" utterances from this British-born San Francisco character are calling the wife from small town Missouri involved in the swap, Gayla Long, a "dumb redneck" and "lower class." In addition, his attitudes reflect a distinct leftwing anti-Americanism. Fowler finds it "humiliating" and "objectionable" to sing the national anthem. He also mocks Gayla Long because her sons want to someday join the military. And all this is just skimming the surface of Fowler's incredible rudeness which included telling his own kids to not even speak to Long.
All this caused a firestorm of reaction on the web including even a StephenFowlerSucks.com blog. However, despite the immediate notoriety of Fowler in the blogosphere, Fowler's hometown newspaper, the San Francisco Chronicle, neglected to publish a story about their most "distinguished" citizen for weeks. When an article was finally published, the Chronicle neglected to go into any real detail of Fowler's hideous behavior. Check out their highly abridged version of what happened written by Justin Berton and all you can figure out is that Fowler may have been just a bit impolite:

I guess I’ve been living in a cave ‘cause this is the first I’ve seen of this....arrogant pri!ck. I can’t hardly believe a person would voluntarily act like that on a tv show; I almost believe it’s an act for ratings. Regardless, he didn’t do any of his t-shirt causes any good.
What type of person is so desperate for fame that he would even want be on one of these “reality” shows?
I am sure they did not have to hunt far in San Francisco to find a character like him. The show must have searched for more than 30 nanoseconds!
Now you see the true mindset of the elitist liberal. When does he get his limousine?
It is the most idiotic silliness I have yet to see...except...well, maybe that epitome of stupidity: "The Bachelor".

Just exactly who is Fowler and why should we care about his antics?

Because he perfectly reflects the attitudes of many San Francisco liberals.
I don’t watch the show any longer because it is so embarrassing - but my favorite episode from the past was the little cajun boy with the mullet - you couldn’t even understand half of what he said but he was adorable.
This is a ridiculous statement. People just don't think of those things to say if they don't believe them. I believe he was told to say what he really thinks. And he did.
I read the SF Chron piece and as much as I hate that rag, I must say, it was a factual, well written piece. It didn’t engage in hyperbole and explored the possibility that this whole thing was done for ratings sake...which is a distinct possibility. Though, I still think Fowler is an a-hole.

A cookie to the first person who can find a photo of Stephen Fowler wearing an Obama button or attending an Obama rally.
By calling a blog that objected to Fowler, "vitriolic?" Also it went into no real deal as to Fowlers antics on that show.
Speaking of comfortable caves...
There are two reasons people go on these shows:
1. They're given $50K for a week's work, and have the opportunity to go stay someplace else--in the case of the downmarket half of the equation, they can go stay in relatively ritzy surroundings for a week and have some fun if they can put up with the strange kids and husband.
2. If they're already in a good financial position, they sometimes seem to think that they can spread their superior wisdom and do the ordinary people some good. It's a chance to show off how smart and successful they are. While pocketing $50K for a week's aggravation, of course.
