Now that FaceBook has become the popularity litmus test de rigueur, the more friends the merrier. So what's to stop you from adding an elephant seal to your growing list of cohorts? We can always use more friends, especially when they help teach us things about ourselves and the world around us. And according to NPR's All Things Considered, this was Nicole Teutschel's impetus for creating a FaceBook page for Penelope Seal.

Penelope and her pup on the beach. The visible tag tracks her position and a small tag on her back records her depth over time.
'What would happen if we gave one seal a Facebook page?'"
One need only visit Penelope's FB page to find out the answer. At last count she had collected more than 3,315 friends. Her latest status reads, "Penelope Seal is undulating down the beach towards the ocean! It's time for her to return to the North Pacific for the first of two migrations she'll have this year." And her relationship status? "It's complicated."

I thought someone had taped an M-80 it her head.
To: JoeProBono
Oh, how cute. Let’s kill and eat her.

I think I'll add Penelope as a friend and post seal recipes.
Ingredients
Directions
-
1
In a saucepan over medium-high heat, cook the oil out of a few fatty pieces of seal. -
2
Add meat and onion. Cook, stirring, until the surfaces of the meat are done. -
3
In layers, add carrots, then turnips, potatoes, and finally parsnips. Add water to cover, bring to a boil, then reduce heat to maintain a simmer. -
4
Cook about 35 minutes, or until vegetables are tender. Stir in ketchip if desired.

It would be interesting to see the reaction of all her face book friends if she is snapped up by a hungry great white or playful orca.

Get in line. They look like elephant seals. Which means there’s probably a group of VERY large Great Whites in the waters near their beach {Farallons?] waiting to nosh.
