Lions and Tigers and Bears, Beware: Nine New Band-Name Trends on the Rise at SXSW
Paste Magazine ^ | March 8, 2009 | By Rachael Maddux

Posted on 03/12/2009 11:52:29 AM PDT by a fool in paradise

Around this time last year, Paste's marketing director (now-emeritus) Caren Kelleher compiled a pretty freakishly extensive blog post detailing statistical trends among bands playing at the 2008 SXSW Music Conference. It seemed, then, that animal band names were actually on the wane, but judging from this year's schedule, they've definitely made a comeback; there are more than 60 animal bands slated to play the 2009 conference (including associate editor Kate Kiefer's favorite, Kittens Ablaze).

But still, what's next? At one point, it looked like crystal bands were the next big thing, but that trend seems to have spluttered out, so I took a closer list at the schedule to see what other trends were on the rise. Caren has a way with spreadsheets that I could never dream of matching, so here's a way less scientific-looking breakdown of some of the post popular band-name trends among artists playing this year's SXSW. Who's the biggest threat? Well, after centuries of struggling to overcome social, political, intellectual, and perhaps most of all, musical, marginalization, it looks like men are finally getting their due. Congrats!

Dave Gonzales & the Stone River Boys

Went to junior college with this guy. He was in rockabilly band The Palladins and went on to form the Hacienda Brothers with Chris Gaffney. Gaffney died of liver cancer last year.

Johnny Cash played the SXSW back in 1994. It isn’t just for undiscovered bands.

I’ve heard the Black Angels.

There are over a thousand bands listed, this are just part of the name game...

SXSW started out as a venue for unsigned bands to be seen and be signed. However, now Labels bring in their famous band to draw in crowds to their showcases so the lesser known acts. There are of course still plenty of unsigned bands that play.

As for more well known acts that have played SXSW over the years I have seen Johnny Cash, Sonic Youth, Carl Perkins, Tony Bennett, Iggy Pop, REM and Southern Culture on the Skids.

I think this year will be my 20th SXSW.

Yeah, I think Roky Erickson played last year or the year before. I played with the Indigo Girls back in 95 at the Texas Music Hall for SXSW, that was a hoot. Just didn’t think the Oak Ridge Boys were “weird” enough for Austin : )
Wish it was closer though, always a good time...

Was that the Ausin Music Hall?

.
I might have been at that show.

Michele Shocked may have also played that night.

That was a nice venue that no longer exists.

Saw the Cramps there, the Ramones, Butthole Surfers and B.B. King.

A great venue.

I have always thought of making a band name software engine to help out garage bands thinking of a name.

All you do is pick 1 or more major categories, say, a vegetable and a body part.

You click "GO" and it will randomly pick something out like...

Broccoli Toenails
