A shopkeeper has cut litter in her village by 40 per cent by writing children's names on their sweet wrappers.
Yvonne Froud, 52, marks each wrapper, crisp packet and drinks container with the name of the buyer using a black indelible marker pen.
Litter louts who drop their rubbish are shown the evidence and temporarily banned from her shop or told to go on a litter-pick.
The two-week scheme has been so successful Yvonne might extend it to adult shoppers at her post office and stores in Joys Green, Glos.
She said yesterday: "I was so disgusted by the litter I had to do something about it.
"Now if we find packets around the village we know who they belong to.
"I will do it with adults if they start littering too."
Ollie Williams, eight, said: "I have to put the packet in the bin because it has my name on it."
I think Ms. Froud is about to be sued into bankruptcy for hurting the feelings of her young customers.
I like it! Littering is one of my top pet peeves.
Good idea! Of course, BO would’ve attached a GPS system to the candy bars to track down the culprit and tax them appropriately.
Now here is an idea that will cut crime better than serializing bullets. A friend lives about 1 Starbucks Medium from a coffee shop, so her front yard and sidewalk collects empty paper cups complete with their little jackets. Littering is illegal, $200 fine, that’s more than running a red light. She picks them up and chucks them in her own trash (I’ve suggested going back to the shop with a month’s worth and dumping them on the floor, but that’s “confrontational and besides it’s not the shop’s fault”)
So if we could have the purchaser’s name printed on the cup at the store, it would greatly cut down on the mess.
I mean, that’s how Arlo Guthrie got busted for littering, they found his name in the trashbag.
He’d make them pay into a Litter Offset Fund, monies going to a band of volunteers who comb the streets for litter.
Probably should have started with them. Kids who do this usually learned it from watching their parents.

Really, I’m fine. It’s just that every once in a while, I dream that I’m smoking....and it’s wonderful....and then, just when I’ve managed to think about something else, a charming FRiend brings it up.
But really, I’m fine.
That is an encouragement to litter, because the definition of litter is: trash, wastepaper or garbage lying scattered about (Merriam-Webster). So to be true to the meaning of the word, litter's place is scattered about.
It also teaches personal responsibility. I like it too.

Doesn’t Starbucks already do that? The last three I’ve been in, one of which was on the other end of the country from the other two, ask you for your name when you buy so you can pick up the right drink at the other end... instead of just saying “Caramel frappucino” and having all 3 people who ordered that think it’s theirs, they can look at the cup and say “Caramel frappucino for Sally” and Sally can pick up her drink and everyone else will know it’s not theirs she’s taking.
