Request: add ability to search by author of article
March 22, 2009 | reaganaut1

It would be nice if one could search threads by the author of the original article. Currently one can search by user (the FR member who is posting). Often a column by someone like Thomas Sowell is marked by the keyword "sowell", but if the author's name has not been designated as a keyword for the thread, I don't think this works.

Yeah, and how about this one?
When posting an article, create an option box
to allow the poster to “check for duplicates”
that would search and display any matches to
that particular URL in order of posting date/time.
This would allow the poster to see if an article
had already been posted, but would allow the poster
to either go ahead with the posting ... or not...

This is why Admin moderators ask that only the original title of the article be used.

As search by the poster is supposed to be done before posting any article.
I always do and have yet to have the process fail me.
Using a Google deep search on FR is also very helpful and will pick up what may be missed by the FR search.

If you use the author of an article in a keyword search, it will usually show if an article by them has been posted.

We’ve been asking for a “search by author” function for at least five years. Maybe someday ...

I have found that many posters get so cute in their choice of keywords which are absolutely meaningless to anyone that the search function is essentially useless.

That’s why I also ignore all snide remarks about “already posted”.

Not complaining, just stating facts as I see them.

This would be good. Also good IMO would be for the software to automatically check for a duplicate post when the user tries to post, and if it finds a duplicate to show it to the user and ask "are you sure you want to post?".

Start by fixing the bugs in the Search feature — I’ve pointed them out a couple of times — and that will go a long way to eliminating some duplicate posts.
