Why It's Harder for African Americans to Stop Smoking

With the increase in cigarette tax and the cost of cigarettes officially being much more expensive, it's the perfect time to focus on ways to stop smoking.

For many, particularly African Americans who smoke menthol cigarettes, that may be a difficult task.

According to researchers, menthol cigarettes are harder to quit, particularly among African American and Latino smokers.

That is the finding of a study which examined the effects of menthol on quit rates among a diverse group of nearly 1,700 smokers attending a Tobacco Dependence Clinic at the UMDNJ-School of Public Health.

“We previously found that menthol cigarette smokers take in more nicotine and carbon monoxide per cigarette. This study shows that menthol smokers also find it harder to quit, despite smoking fewer cigarettes per day,” said study author Kunal Gandhi, MBBS, MPH, a researcher in the division of addiction psychiatry at the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Jonathan Foulds, director of the Tobacco Dependence Program, added “These results build on growing evidence suggesting that menthol is not a neutral flavoring in cigarettes. It masks the harshness of the nicotine and toxins, affects the way the cigarette is smoked and makes it more deadly and addictive.”

According to Foulds, “More than 80 percent of the African American smokers attending our clinic smoke menthols, and they have half the quit rate of African Americans who smoke non-menthol cigarettes.”

The researchers believe the cooling effect of the menthol makes it easier to inhale more nicotine from each cigarette and, therefore, to obtain a stronger and more addictive nicotine dose. “That may be part of the reason why African Americans have much higher rates of lung cancer,” Foulds said.

The researchers also are concerned that more young and Latino smokers are becoming addicted to menthol cigarettes. The tobacco industry may target its marketing of menthol cigarettes to groups with less cash to spend, such as youths, with the aim of getting them hooked even on fewer cigarettes per day, they said.

In addition to the rise in cigarette tax, today April 1st marks the 39th anniversary of the Cigarette Advertising Ban of 1970. That day, President Richard Nixon signed the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act that banned TV and radio cigarette ads. However, cigarette manufacturers continue to find ways to market their products.

Recently, Black leaders in California called on the tobacco industry to stop targeting their community with the promotion of menthol cigarettes and deceptive advertising. Menthol cigarettes are not more toxic than regular cigarettes, but the mint flavor and cooling sensation makes them more enticing and easier to smoke, paving the road to nicotine addiction.

This article and the people that wrote it are racists!

Is it also more difficult for African Americans to quit smoking “crack”?

Yeah and they will tell you than Chantix makes you crazy. I used it and quit. There are times when I think that they should take a flying leap.

Would they be OK with it if tobacco companies stopped selling to retailers in "their communities" altogether?

President Obama signed a law early in his administration to raise taxes from 39 cents to $1.01 per pack of cigarettes and from 19.5 cents to 50 cents per pound for chewing tobacco. Source AP, Sunday, March 29, 2009

When Joe Biden was asked how he felt about it he was quoted as saying; “people have to pay more taxes under an Obama-Biden administration. “You got it, It’s time to be patriotic, time to jump in, time to be part of the deal, time to help America out of the rut...by everyone paying more taxes”

(took a little liberty with the quote, but the principle still applies).

Stopping is 90% a matter of will power, you must stop making excuses to yourself and others and just tough it out. Like a root canal, do it and be done with it.

So if there were no black actors used in cigarette advertising, would they then complain about the lack of diversity?

The blacks need not worry about this...... Obama is going to fix this, just like he’s going to fix every other problem the White man used to keep them down.

"OBama hates black people"

Ahem - you think he likes caucasions? (We already know he loves the illegal aliens (sorry - I forgot we're not allowed to say that any more) - poor people south of the border that are being threatened by the drug cartel - so they must come north - for safety. (Oh - and bring their families, too - WE will take care of them!)

So you can’t say that African Americans prefer watermelon or fried chicken but you can say that they prefer menthol cigarettes? Either they are both racist or neither.
Just an observation.

I used to be a three pack a day smoker that could breeze through 5 packs on heavy drinking nights, that was Marlboros although I smoked Winstons on the beach and in windy areas, near the end I was drifting more and more to filterless cigarettes, I quit cold turkey when the mood hit me.

I seriously doubt that many menthol smokers are getting more nicotine than my system was.
