Seoul, Korea

6 April 1951

My dearest Helen, Patty and Chuckie,

Yesterday brought me a letter from you but I didn't answer it last night as I was quite tired and laid down for a few minutes but fell asleep only to wake up at 11:00 PM still tired so I got into bed. Tonight I am duty officer but hope to get a good night sleep.

I doubt it was a pleasant change for you having Marshall and Marie stay for a while and play a few cards and I surely hope you all had a pleasant evening, considering.

Honey, your remark about irritating others with your talk about my returning sounds as though someone has already complained. If you aren't happy living as you are then I want you to either get your own place or take a trip to my Mother's place paying the expenses there and a train ticket back. I know Mother would be happy to have you and it would lessen her worry. I just hope it won't be too long before I am put on orders for return but I can't give you any favorable info at the present time. I am certain of one thing and that is that I will be the first one out of this company if Col. Nolen has anything to do with it. Someone said tonight that they heard on the radio that rotation was definitely going to start the 15th.

I also received a letter from Mother yesterday and one from Brenda. Mother is on half days now and has had to go to the doctor for her heart. He X-rayed her heart and gave her a prescription for some pills to take if she gets a pain in her chest while walking. I talked with a doctor here today and he said she has a serious heart condition but if she is careful and gets enough rest, she can live for quite a few years. Naturally it has me a little concerned because I know she worries about my being over here.

Darling, I am looking forward to the feel of your arms around me and you can leave them there forever as far as I am concerned and we just won't be able to get close enough. Remember how close we have tried to get together in the past? Well, I am going to take up trying when I do get home so you make sure you are strong to help me a lot. I can feel the warmth of your body close to mine now and when I close my eyes, I want to reach out and touch you and kiss you all over from head to foot. Can you realize just how much trouble I'll give you when "Our Day" comes? "Joe" sure misses "Betsy" and is very anxious to get back to her. Every time he thinks of her, he "twitches".

It was very nice for Aunt Emma to send the gifts to Patty and Chuckie but I was sorry to hear about her patient dying. Aunt Emma owes me a letter so I'll probably be receiving one soon.

Well, today Chuckie is 3 months old and must be getting to be a big boy, growing as you say he is. I'll be so glad to see him and I hope he won't have many more birth-months to celebrate before I am there. I'll bet there will be quite a few noticeable changes with Patty but I am anticipating a few I can think of. I really do hope she remembers me but I am proud of her anyway.

Well Darling, this is about all I have for news tonight but hope and pray every day that I'll have the news we are both waiting for to send you soon.

Take good care of yourself and pray some more that I'll soon be there to be with you and the children.

Goodnight and Sweet Dreams to the most wonderful wife and family in the whole world.

With all my love and kisses,

    Van

        Daddy
