Police say a man was shot and killed Thursday morning in Brookings when he tried to break into a home.
According to police, 23-year-old Bradley Joe Odens died at the Brookings hospital after being shot inside the home of a 28-year-old man shortly before 2 a.m.
Police Captain Jeff Miller says Odens may have been confused as to where he was and continued to force his way into the home after being warned by the resident. Miller says Odens broke a window in a door as he was trying to get in.
He says one shot was fired, hitting Odens in the chest. Miller says the two men lived two houses apart but did not know each other.
No arrests have been made, and an investigation continues. Miller says it's too soon to determine if it was a justifiable shooting but that it doesn't appear that foul play was involved.
Future episode of “1,000 Ways to Die.”
A happy ending.
Another child dead by senseless gun violence.
One fatal center mass shot...now that’s gun control!
I am all for the right to self defense, but in this case I disagree with you bgill...it’s not “A happy ending” for college senior Bradley Odens or the man who killed him. See picture and story here:

Police think Odens was confused as to his whereabouts. His house at 143 Main is just two houses down from the 28-year-old’s and both are white. But whatever the reason, his school at South Dakota State University is mourning the loss of their student, classmate, and friend.
According to University officials, Odens was a senior and studying electronics engineering technology. His adviser and professor Byron Garry says he was planning on graduating in December. Just hours after his death, Garry got an e-mail, which informed him of the bad news.
“It was quite a stun, you know? Just had him in class yesterday; talking to him about his senior project group... with his group. So, it was quite a surprise to find that out this morning,” said Garry.
Having taught at SDSU for around 20 years, Garry could think of just one lesson one could take away from this. He said, “Appreciate the people, your friends and family, when your with them.”
sadly the most glaring lesson is the seriousness of personal responsibility...those who have it tend to live to learn from their mistakes...
Indeed. Did this fellow, after drinking himself nearly blind, DRIVE to that address?
At least this won't turn into a near international incident, like that similar shooting in Baton Rouge some years ago where a Japanese exchange sudent was killed.
sudent = student
Need more caffeine.
Is it just me or does there seem to be a lot of these types of incidents lately? There was one in Colorado recently that almost mirrors this case.
The intruder was warned off by the homeowner. How can you be so drunk as to not hear and understand a loud warning and are still able to kick in a houses front door, much less stand and walk around?
A lot of nice guys are found later in life to have done horrible things. Sure this might be, and probably is, a tragic mistake on the part of the intruder. Yet it could also be a fledging killer getting capped at the start of a murderous career.
Only the good Lord knows. May He show mercy and judge accordingly.

the same way a 'sleepwalker' can find the car keys and cook three course meals etc while unconscious to the world around themselves...
Blackout drunks function and often do amazing [and tragic] things that are nothing but a 'blank spot' in the memory...been there, done that many times...
fortunately for myself, God evidently had Plans for me to live and recount these mis-deeds for others to appreciate His Glory, otherwise i shoulda been dead 1000s of times over...
Prayers for the homeowner to find serenity with his completely justifiable defence of his home...
Blackout drunks happen...... Eaker once dreamed he dated a tall girl with lots of freckles and woke up in the Giraffe cage at the zoo......
As to this incident......I am under no obligation to give a verbal warning to any intruder in my home in daylight or after dark here in Texas. If you have defeated my homes physical , electronic and pup levels of security you win an encounter with a very well armed homeowner with little sympathy for said intruders safety.
Ditto here (not on the giraffe thing), if you make it to my door you’ve invested a bit of effort. It should be rewarded.
Well said ........it’s a zoo out there !
The first rule of zoo club is you don’t talk about zoo club!
prolly along the same lines as not 'pushin' a sleepwalker...just dont know where the mind will go in a state of unconciusness...
main diff for ole gilbo, in sleep or blackout just the same, Ive been known to be fairly 'unruly' when my buttons were pushed...coulda ended up in this situation VERY easily in days past...
You win.....I’m leaving........point made !
yessir Eaker, we would need more cages if all the animals let out the membership list...
