The gun and the ammo must be BOTH locked up and physically separated by compartment or arms reach. If you do not want any problems. Sacramento Sheriff’s policy adopted by most of the State.

No problem. You can move ammo anytime UNLESS it is by commercial means then you need permits etc.

Traveling with Firearms in California

HANDGUNS

California Penal Code section 12025 does not prevent a citizen of the United States over 18 years of age who is not lawfully prohibited from firearm possession, and who resides or is temporarily in California, from transporting by motor vehicle any pistol, revolver, or other firearm capable of being concealed upon the person provided the firearm is unloaded and stored in a locked container.

The term "locked container" means a secure container which is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device. This includes the trunk of a motor vehicle, but does not include the utility or glove compartment. For more information, refer to California Penal Code Section 12026.1.

SHOTGUNS AND RIFLES

Nonconcealable firearms (rifles and shotguns) are not generally covered within the provisions of California Penal Code section 12025 and therefore are not required to be transported in a locked container. However, as with any firearm, nonconcealable firearms must be unloaded while they are being transported. A rifle or shotgun that is defined as an assault weapon pursuant to Penal Code 12276 or 12276.1 must be transported in accordance with Penal Code section 12026.1.

REGISTERED ASSAULT WEAPONS

California Penal Code section 12285(c)(7) requires that registered assault weapons may be transported only between specified locations and must be unloaded and in a locked container when transported.

The term "locked container" means a secure container which is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device. This includes the trunk of a motor vehicle, but does not include the utility or glove compartment. For more information, refer to California Penal Code Section 12026.1.

Locking them both up is best practice for least amount of hassle but not the law. It is a good idea, but not the law.

Yea I know what the statute says. I am talking about how much hassle you want to have by the side of the road. I had a run in with a CHP “officer” near Susanville with ONLY a rifle in the vehicle - no ammo. He does not work for the CHP anymore. FOUR hours of “detained” time by the road.

Like I said, best practice to not get hassled. I still believe they will hassle you anyway, cuz U a “citizen”.

They will ask stupid questions which you must not answer:
Why do you have a gun?
What is your intent with a gun?
Where did you purchase?
Where are you going?
Where did you come from?
where have you been today?

Then they will repeat questions. The really good ones will engage you in a conversation and then innocuously repeat a question or two. The goal being to catch you in the slightest inconsistency in previous statement.

Again, I agree with your post, as a best practice.

I also have a link where the NRA describes the laws. It is on page two (2):

If the ammo is boxed then you can put it anywhere in the vehicle, especially since you will not be carrying firearms. No gun to be loaded, no danger in the ammo. Not yet anyway!

since the NRA will not be there to defend me i will not count on their position.

this was an odd case. I picked up the gun - which was mine - from the gunsmith school at the community college in Susanville. I laid it in the back of my Tahoe and proceeded down 395. At the spot where cell phones do not work the CHP has a speed trap. This punk pulls me over because he could not read my license plate (pure c$ap). Noticed the gun and pulled his and got all huffy. Before it was over I had the local CHP commander, the Sheriff's dept and myself in a three way verbal stand off. BTW I had a Kalifornia hunting license at the time so transporting the gun in the manner I did was perfectly legal. I could of even had it loaded (not one in the pipe). To make it short I got the little puke fired. A very good friend of mine was riding buddies with the CHP head of IA.

Like I said, “citizen”. They see no reason for you to have gun. Having one in plain view is just not good practice. I lived in Oklahoma and I would not travel with my gun where it could be viewed. The LEO would need to search my vehicle to lay his eyes on it.

Sadly, I was cleaning all my guns, while on a fishing trip and big swell came up and washed them all over board.

Oh, well...

Here in the rural West it is more unusual to see a vehicle without a gun in it than not when traveling the outback.

unless i am missing something you dont need to register your gun in california where i live and there isnt even any way to do so.

All Handguns in the state need to be registered. See the link to the CAL AG's site above somewhere.

handguns bought within the state dont need to be registered. if you import a handgun you need to fill out a form.

Iuse to live in Oklahoma and we had a gun rack with the guns sitting right there in the window.

Funny, I never felt afraid when I saw people driving around with them.

Thanks for not asking the Mod to take this thread down. There is no reason to take any thread. They are used as bookmarks, debate and dissemanation.

Oh and we do have fun.

Post again, Join the NRA(they are only $25 clams a year and they are running a special right now. That’s right you can join for FREE. Why? Because they need a huge census of 2nd ammendment supporter to show congress their numbers)

I just received an email telling me about the free NRA membership. I let mine lapse years ago...I will renew.
