Posted on 04/16/2009 1:43:27 PM PDT by Lucky9teen

U.S. President Barack Obama arrives to make remarks on a proposed high-speed rail system in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington, April 16, 2009. President Obama outlined his plan for developing "long overdue" high-speed rail on Thursday that would rival air travel, create jobs and help curb the U.S. transportation system's appetite for oil.

Any fool can see it is not the middle this nation and perhaps more development in lower population states might encourage more equitable population distribution.

Japan and France are much much smaller than the United States.

Traveling by rail is great if
1. you don’t have 3 children with you
2. the restrooms are working

It’ll take about 3 days to go to Seattle and the cost will be $20.00 less than flying.

This is from experience with Amtrak.

High speed rail can be nice because one travels from downtown to downtown without the hassle of getting into and out of airports. Have had some nice trips in Europe on the things.

Before passing final judgment: Let's see transit times, a club car sketch and the bar menu for the LA-Vegas run.

And no malcontent has interfered with the tracks.

And no engineer is busy texting when he should be doing his job.

Passenger Trains: A 19th century solution to a 21st century problem.

Lets have a bigger waste of taxpayer money than AMTRAK.

High-speed rail is heavily subsidized in every country. It will require a $4.00/gallon gas tax to move people out of their cars and into the trains which, of course, won’t go where you want to go.

>Bullet Trains are very common in Japan, and span the entire country

So what? The entire country has the land mass of New Jersey, with about 200 times the population density.

They had money to waste building it, and massive public spending did not budge the long standing stagflation.

Profitable? I doubt it.
If it were possible to be profitable, then private enterprise would have rushed to build it without fail.
