Soon to grow on the moon: Brussels sprouts and flowers
csmonitor ^ | 04.16.09 | Judy Lowe

The idea of growing common flowers and vegetables on the moon seems like something out of a SF novel. But it’s probably going to happen sooner than you think. The Telegraph reports that cabbage and Brussels sprouts could be growing in a mini-greenhouse on the moon in 2012. The idea is to find out if and how a moon colony could produce its own food. Why Brussels sprouts, which would rarely top a veggie popularity poll? “Because,” says the article,” brassica [the family of which cabbages, sprouts, broccoli, and kale are members] goes from seed to flower in just 14 days, it can complete its life cycle in a single lunar night.” So future residents of Mars — unlike a former US president — better be fans of broccoli. But even space colonizers can’t live by cabbage alone. They will need beauty. Paragon Space Development Corp., the Arizona company behind this (in partnership with Odyssey Moon Ltd.), is also planning to experiment with flowers and possible aquatic plants on the moon by 2014, reports Space.com. Wouldn’t it be neat if eventually moonflowers could grow on the moon?

I’d grow sunflowers, just for the irony.

I love brussels sprouts.

Can you imagine how much a pound of lunar-grown veg would sell for?

As the Poet says,

They used to grow food in Kansas
Now they want to grow it on the moon and eat it raw.
I can see the day coming when even your home garden
Is gonna be against the law.

(From “Union Sundown”, one of his worst songs, but still thought-provoking)

Oh does THAT picture bring back memories....

Child abusing mother that I was...my kids HAD TO taste, and I mean TASTE whatever veggie I put in front of them.

I’ll never forget the brussels sprout night. They all tried their own way to get that ONE sprout down. The son put his in the bottom of his glass of milk, clever feller that he THOUGHT he was...

One daughter just wham, threw it in her mouth and got it over with.

The other daughter took itty bitty bites till it was all gone.

They still LAUGH about that night... :) :)

Two of the three will eat ANY veggie now...

Does this mean that we will finally get rid of all the Brussel Sprouts here? Thank goodness.

Ah, but brussel sprouts and cabbages are a major cause of flatulance...

wouldn’t want to live in an enclosed space after a couple guys ate a supper of them...
