VANITY - Computer Security

For a number of years I have been using Trend Micro's PCCillin Internet Security package. It has worked well, in all this time I have not been sidelined by an infection on any of my computers.

No more!

Trend Micro has slowly become nagware. The worst nagware I have ever seen. My license expires the first week of May. I started getting "Reminders" to renew my subscription in January! That is beyond stupid!

This leads me to today's question. I have seen on threads I can't find now where FReepers have recommended a FREE anti-virus program and a FREE firewall that worked well. Can some kind FReeper link to them please?

Whatever I switch to has gotta be FREE. I have some serious medical issues I am dealing with. I cannot afford to pay for nagware that is such a pain to use.

ditto bump for AVG Anti-Virus / Zone Alarm (or Windows)

I also add a registry cleaner (TweakNow RegCleaner) and an anti-spyware tool (Spybot Search and Distroy).

Comodo.com firewall is one of the strongest. It passes the grc.com stealth test.

You can still find the older editions as standalone. They now put their firewall as part of a package.

During Comodo install one can chose:
Install firewall only
Install anti-virus only
install both

As I use Avira anti-virus I choose to install the Comodo firewall only.

Looks like they just came out with Ubuntu 9.04. I’m downloading right now.

Posting on a Linux box, with Clamav running.

Though reading about Windows 7 with the Virtual XP today on FR, I must confess that actually sounds intriguing.

Last night I switched over to AVG anti-virus and Comodo Firewall. Both are working well, and I am happy.

Thanks.
