Residents Say They're Terrorized By Pit Bulls

SANFORD, Fla. -- Some Sanford homeowners say they're being terrorized by their neighbor's pit bulls. One of the dogs has already attacked a neighbor near Lily Court in Sanford.

Eyewitness News has learned the dogs' owners are not keeping their fence secure. Some of the breaks in the fence are big enough for an adult to easily climb through.

After many calls to animal control, neighbors say they want the fence fixed once and for all.

"Chasing children, attacking children. Chasing people onto their roofs. That can't be happening in a city bottom line," said neighborhood watch coordinator, Wanda Chandler.

Animal Services says a male pit bull attacked a neighbor last fall and that dog was put to sleep. However, since then, the two remaining pit bulls have been picked up by trappers three times.

Neighbors say, the dogs escaped many more times and killed cats, ducks and other small animals.

"My neighbors have told me and the neighborhood watch has said, 'be careful when you're coming down here. These dogs will chase you,'" said neighbor, Pat Doughty.

The dogs' owners were eager to blame everyone else.

"Neighbors say it's a real problem. They're getting out bothering people, killing cats," said WFTV reporter George Spencer.

"No. That's not the problem. The problem is our neighbors won't leave them alone," said the dogs' owner.

But residents say they want nothing more than a secure fence. They worry the dogs get more violent with each escape.

"Well, that's a concern too. Even a grown person can't get away from a pit bull. Let's face it," said Doughty.

The homeowners try to blame the bad fence on their landlord, but that's their aunt. Either way, Animal Services said it is every pet owner's responsibility to keep their animals on their property.

Pet owners are hit with fines that increase every time trappers pick up their pet.

On a prior post I misfired and didn't read one of your posts. I'm sorry and stand corrected.
A dangerous animal has no place around where people live. Pitts make up less than 5% of the dog population of our country yet they account for over 40% of dog attacks on humans and over 70% of K9 homicides. All the “sweet little dogie” stories and pictures can not change these true and factual statistics. Given the true facts my question is quite simple. What does a pitt bull do that another dog wouldn't do? Why own a pitt and not a kinder breed? I see no reason for their continued existence. If someone wants to argue this subject I'm here and would be happy to get into any exchange that is based on truth and fact.

Those stats seem to be close to what I have found,,,

2-3% of dogs commit 65% of maulings and K-9 homicides(IIRC).

I would absolutely love to see pics of all of these “pit bulls” that you post about. I’d be willing to bet a good percentage of them aren’t pits or are just mixes. I’ve never seen a person so obsessed like you are.

LOL! Yep. That's my problem. Whenever I see a Pittie I just can't resist antagonizing it 'till it attacks. Fun! All kidding aside, you catch more flys with honey. Looks more like a fence problem than a dog problem. Seemed quite well behaved on camera, but they're probably "field biters." Neighbors could offer to help repair the fence. Improve the looks of the neighborhood. Win-win for everybody.

I had a pit that was quite adept at climbing ladders. But he only did it so he could go down the slide at the park.

Sorry to hear that. I own a beagle and have loved dogs my whole life.
Pit bulls, though: I don’t consider them to be “dogs” any more than wolves are. On our walks, I carry a .45 to protect against predators.
