Word For The Day, Wednesday, May 13, 2009 - calamari
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 05/13/2009 | The Slacker

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

calamari • \kah-luh-MAHR-ee\ • noun
squid used as food

Example sentence:

Ophelia tried fried calamari for the first time from a small seafood shack near the beach.

Did you know?
The word "calamari" was borrowed into English from 17th-century Italian, where it functioned as the plural of "calamaro" or "calamaio." The Italian word, in turn, comes from the Medieval Latin noun "calamarium," meaning "ink pot" or "pen case," and can be ultimately traced back to Latin "calamus," meaning "reed pen." The transition from pens and ink to squid is not surprising, given the inky substance that a squid ejects and the long tapered shape of the squid's body. English speakers have also adopted "calamus" itself as a word referring to both a reed pen and to a number of plants.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

If a friend insists you try calamari since they sampled something they thought disgusting which you liked, would that be a case of squid pro quo?

i read somewhere yesterday that the Republicans are having trouble figuring out how to get across how MASSIVE the Dem plans/proposals are. That people might get something on a smaller, but they just can’t conceive of it on a massive scale. Like with the national debt, they need to find some way to make this concrete to people. People don’t care about their OWN debt let alone the country’s debt, so it’s not resonating with them. they can’t just say oh the national debt is ginormous. not even what each man woman and child would owe will do the trick bc unless those people are presented with a bill that nonpayment of will end them in jail, they are STILL not going to get it. Americans are by and large very self centered and until it’s all presented in a way that tangibly affects them, they will not care.

If you weren't already nauseous, I usually order Ika (squid sushi) when I go to the local Sushi restaurant.
