Former fundamentalist 'debunks' Bible

Just so you know, Bart Ehrman says he's not the anti-Christ. Bart Ehrman says most of the New Testament is a forgery but it's still an important body of work. Bart Ehrman says most of the New Testament is a forgery but it's still an important body of work. He says he's not trying to destroy your faith. He's not trying to bash the Bible. And, though his mother no longer talks to him about religion, Ehrman says some of his best friends are Christian. Ehrman, a best-selling author and a professor of religious studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is a biblical sleuth whose investigations make some people very angry. Like the fictional Robert Langdon character played by actor Tom Hanks in the movie "Angels & Demons," he delves into the past to challenge some of Christianity's central claims. In Ehrman's latest book, "Jesus, Interrupted," he concludes: Doctrines such as the divinity of Jesus and heaven and hell are not based on anything Jesus or his earlier followers said. At least 19 of the 27 books in the New Testament are forgeries. Believing the Bible is infallible is not a condition for being a Christian.

Yeah, I’ve seen alot of that stuff and am not impressed that much by their scholarship. I wouldn’t call it well documented. Most of their arguments are pontificating assertions and the ‘most likely he was...’ speculation, not logic based on facts.

A great deal spoke some greek Greek back then because it was the trade language, much like English today. He may have not had much education, but by today’s pathetic standards it’d probably be equal to college level.

You have judged Joel (which,as Christians, we are not supposed to do) by one appearance on Larry King Live. I listen to him EVERY week and I have also heard him speak in person. I, unlike you, do not presume to know a person's heart by one appearance on a secular TV show.

As far as Rick Warren, his book, The Purpose-Driven Life, is one of the best, and most simple, explanations of the Christian faith that I have ever read. My Sunday School class studied it extensively several years ago and watched the accompanying videos with Rick Warren. He has been the first step to accepting Christ for more people than you can count.

Also Professors of Criminology should not be criminals

Why not? Because they are too cynical of criminology to be able to present it objectively? Yes, I agree.

“It took off primarily through the efforts of Constantine, who made it the official religion of the empire”

Only in part. Christianity had spread through about 20% of the Roman Empire before Constantine’s conversion. This kind of a spread from a non-militant religion that originated in the lower classes is historically unheard of.

“Christianity got a head start of over 600 years to Islam, yet Islam now has over 1.5 billion followers.”

True. And much of Islam’s spread has been by the sword. Some would argue the divine nature of Islam’s conquests as its proof.

My simple point is that a lower-class religion spread in a way that’s really unprecedented in history. It did so without armies, without power, and relatively without influence.

I have listened to Joel and Rick on many occasions, both of them are afraid to stand up and be counted. They both refused to condemn what Obama stands for. Be courageous like Franklin Graham, Dr Dobson etc. Rick Warren promoted Obama for President, IMHO he has blood on his hands.

Christianity is already defined in a vast number of differing ways by those who call themselves Christian.

"His claims, though, take on some of Christianity's most sacred tenets, like the resurrection of Jesus. Ehrman says he doesn't think the resurrection took place. There's no proof Jesus physically rose from the dead, and the resurrection stories contradict one another, he says."

Thanks for the ping.

This poor fellow cannot even be considered an amateur.

Here are the origins of the truths you seem so reluctant to accept and have in fact tried to dissemble by selective omission, quoting a clause out of context for what follows immediately upon what you quoted in order to dissemble and thus deceive. Jesus is The Word, and Jesus is The Life, and Jesus IS the Light. It is you who have sought to use 'creative interpretation' ...

The Gospel of John, Chapter One:

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 The same was in the beginning with God.

3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

...

The poster asserted: "This is forced overinterpretation. There is nothing to suggest that that verse refers in any way to Jesus."

If satan wants to convey a lie, he usually starts with a small piece of truth and places his lie in that isolated context, just as the poster TBP has done in asserting 'there is nothing to suggest that that' verse refers in any way to Jesus. By purposely not posting the verses which follow, the servant of a lie seeks to ignore that the Bible is its own best commentary and deny the power of truth by omitting that which does not fit the poster's desired deceit.

And of course, you are smarter than everyone else! LOL
I imply nothing. I believe. It’s that simple. You don’t, and so you contort yourself to try to make that logical. Have at it. My only job is to be a witness. What you make of that is your business. And God’s.

And you dance around my simple question.

It's a simple question with no single answer. How about I find another person who calls himself Christian to answer you. I wonder if his answer will agree with yours.

Tis a beautiful Sunday here in the foothills of the Appalachians.

You are truly blessed! I am getting use to the Georgia's humidity and it's beautiful trees and birds! But I miss my California Foothills too.

" God's Ways are not our ways"... Isaiah 55:8 tajgirvan version!
