Mayor Gavin Newsom said Friday that 1,000 city workers would lose their jobs in the coming months to help close a growing budget deficit, a swift response after the city's biggest union this week rejected $38 million in wage concessions.
The layoffs will hurt all city departments, according to the mayor's office, but will have the most drastic effect on the Department of Public Health, the city's largest agency. In addition to health care workers, recreation directors, security guards and others will lose their jobs.
A total of 262 city workers have already lost their jobs over the last six months, and hundreds more jobs have been eliminated. The city employs about 29,000 people, ranging from workers at the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir to park gardeners, according to June data from the Controller's Office.

Another plea to Obama for a bailout.
This will never end until ALL money is in the hands of unions, minorities and greens.
This is warfare.
My husband works for a municipality. All non-union city employees took an across the board pay cut (3 percent)...but not the union workers. They’re screaming that they don’t even want to take a pay freeze. Some people have been laid off, but by taking the cuts, they’ve averted many layoffs, which is good news.
“Kinfolk said you better move away from there
Said California is no place for you to be
So I loaded up the truck and I moved from Beverly
Going back to the hills we are
Fishing holes and Country and Western Stars”

Unions = Destructive Greed.
Laughs...
Well, less public health workers having to be around tons of homosexuals and their cocktails of self-inflicted diseases.
They will do the right thing ... after all the alternatives have been tried.
California could be broke by July, state official warns

Does this mean that Arnold just needs to find another 4,000 to lay off? Arnold mentioned 5,000 state wide will be laid off and with SAN FRAN losing a thousand that means 4,000 more or is this separate from what Arnie is doing?
About 28,000 too few IMO.
I’m with you. “Sock it to me” popped into my head since Laugh-In was such a hip California thing, you know. So it’s like OK, we’ll sock THIS to you ... how do you like it, dudes?
Well, gloating is a hollow pleasure, but who can resist?

“Broke” doesn’t mean what it used to.
The career bureaucrats and socialists will find SOME way to kick the can a little further down the road.
I remember that. I wonder where Judy Carne is now.

There will be a limit.
Hey, good question. I knew she had come to no good ... from Wikipedia:
Carne developed drug dependency starting with marijuana and eventually became a heroin addict. She had a near-fatal automobile accident in 1978 that broke her neck. She was in traction for about three months. On October 22 of the same year, she was arrested at London's Gatwick Airport. Her autobiography, Laughing on the Outside, Crying on the Inside (1984), chronicled her difficulties.
... but the question of where she is now is left unanswered . Presumably still on this earth, though, since there is no death date.
... Oh my God, she's got a myspace page!
Much of the “work” the city employees do would be done better if outsourced to private NON UNION industry...
However, MUCH of the city's “work” is bullshit that needn't be done at all by ANYONE...
Cheer up. It’s been announced that by end of July we will have in place a program (with a bureacracy & specialist workers) to save Asians from their gambling habits!
All the teachers may be on strike (there’s a loss) and police on strike and firemen on stike — but Asians will be save from their gambling addictions.
Don’t you love Commifornia — always ahead of the rest!
