Newsweek speculated that there was a Christian voting bloc that would affect the outcome of the American Idol finale -- and others pondered that there might be an anti-gay backlash against Adam. (Although no one but he knows for sure what his true inclinations are...)
I'm not going to suggest that there wasn't a whole bunch of conservative folks voting for Kris -- I'm certain there were, considering that Idol is one of the few shows that (for the most part) is family friendly and appeals to all ages. But honestly that would be a "Pro-Kris" vote, not an "Anti-Adam" vote.
Adam obviously was the more talented singer, with much greater range, and was more of a flamboyant showman. We know there is a contingent out there that likes that sort of performance -- David Cook was the more edgy performer and he prevailed. (Although that, arguably, may have been Revenge of the Rockers, inspired by the early exit of Chris Daughtry the previous season.)
But Kris was more universally appealing, and he also performed on both guitar and piano. When he was done with a song, everyone in the room could at least say -- well, that was nice, and often even more. With Adam, as much as I admired his vocal talents, I often fast-forwarded through the last minute of his performances. It was all too much, and I'm sure there were many others who felt that same way. And many were probably baffled by some of his performances. ("Ring of Fire" anyone?!)
But I truly believe that the tipping point for this contest had to be the female tweenage fans of the show. They were heart-broken last season when David Archuleta lost to the more talented edgy guy, and they were NOT going to let it happen this time! What else did they have to do last night? I would venture that many dialed, got through, hit flash, hit redial, got through, flash, redial, got through, flash, redial... For four... straight... hours.
In one way that bothered me this season -- that more talented singers were losing out to a teen heart-throb. But if that's what it took for the underdog -- the wholesome, came-out-of-nowhere boy next door -- to defeat the affectatious darling of the entertainment crowd and the media... Well, so be it. And maybe today's youth isn't as dumb as I thought.
Adam will still be huge. He didn't need to win. Plus, he can console himself: He never has to sing that "No Boundaries" song ever again!
Congratulations, Kris! May your career shine as brightly as your smile, and your life be filled with even more of the joy that is apparent with your wife and family.
And can someone please make that YouTube video link active? I forget how, and I have to get to bed!
I don’t think he’s gay. I used to wear eye-liner cuz hot chicks who wrote poetry liked it. My grampa did not.
American Idle
I can happily and honestly say that I’ve never in my life watched a minute of this show.
I think some parents are going to be shocked at their cell phone bill’s this month...those texting charges add up..
Well, he definitely is into boys because there are pix of him with his tongue in some other guy’s mouth. I’m pretty sure that isn’t heterosexual behavior. He also likes to dress like a woman.
So there’s that.
BUT he seems to be a very nice guy, and he was very gracious to Kris when he lost. Kris was flabbergasted.
I think Chris Daughtry was season 5, so Daughtry was actually two years previous to Cook, who won season 7.
Um. You don’t think Adam is gay? You haven’t seen the photos or videos?
Take a look at these pictures:

I guess Newsweek heard Obama say that this wasn't a Christian nation.
‘Newsweek speculated that there was a Christian voting bloc ‘that would affect the outcome of the American Idol finale”
Has Newsweek notified the Dept of Homeland Security about this?
Yeah, I’ve seen some of the pictures.
Who knows? The guy seems so pre-packaged it could all be part of his attempt at “mystique”!
Adam is talented, but ultimately headed for work as an opening act for the gamut of the likes of Patti LaBelle and Axel Rose and all the other “vocal divas”.
Kris was a breath of fresh air. Good luck to him.
Your grandfather didn’t like it because he understood that real men don’t wear eyeliner.
same here so I can’t really comment on the show but quite a few FReepers seem to enjoy it each week. maybe I will tune in some time to see what it is all about.
Be glad you haven't seen the pictures that are floating all over the 'net.... you will lose your lunch (unless you actually like two guys making out...).
And I don’t buy the “tweenage” votes being the deciding factor - I know plenty of that age group who absolutely LOVE Adam, and from posts on AI-related message boards - they loved him all over the country as well.
And on the flip side of that - my wife and many of our friends - all WAY past tweenage years - voted like mad for Kris Alen.
And according to the official numbers from AT&T - over 38 million votes were cast just from Arkansas (and they said they were extremely heavy for Kris). So the loyalty of his homes state probably made more difference than the “tweenage” vote.
It’s that Kiss performance that made me glad he didn’t win.
One thing that was very telling about who was going to win, that no one seemed to pick up on, was when there were three contestants left, Adam, Kris, and Danny, and they all went back to their hometowns to sing and greet the people.
The people who turned out for Kris were unbelievably huge in number! Heads as far as the eye could see! It was easily twice the number Danny got and hardly anyone came out to see Adam! He was in a football field at his old school and there were just a small number of girls there.
I was there in Conway (Kris’ hometown) when he came back that week! Was an absolute madhouse!!! Probably the most people that town has ever seen in one place!
“The guy seems so pre-packaged it could all be part of his attempt at mystique!”
Mystique? I don’t kiss another guy to build a mysitque.
Would you?
